The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.

Q: THE FINALS - A Grade v Ex-Services Cricket Club Armidale, 4th/11th April, 1970
Waratahs were handed a thumping, the game effectively lost by tea on the first afternoon as Ian McLean blew away the deck of cards mascarading as Waratahs batting line-up. McLean and Browning made near hundreds on the second Saturday, 134 being added for the last three wickets.

Q: THE FINALS - A Grade v Easts-2, 28th March/11 April 1953
The greatest Final Waratahs ever played and possibly one of the best in the history of the New England CA/ADCA. Everything went wrong for Waratahs on the first day - a teamsheet mix up, run outs, dropped catches, a broken finger. Then it rained for four days before the second day and they had Don Paul.
It still goes wrong for Waratahs, for an engraving error years later meant that the Antill Cup - for A Grade MINOR Premiers, was confused with the Richardson Cup - for PREMIERS - and that error was never rectified, meaning the ADCA records Easts-1 as the Premiers in 1952-53 ... and they didn't even make the Final! The photo evidence makes it clear.

Q: THE FINALS - A Grade v St Peters, 3rd/4th April 1976
In a season that was under-reported in the Armidale Express, St Peters won their first A Grade Premiership, beating Waratahs in the Final.
Batting first, they made a strong total on the back of David Mitchell’s aggressive century, one which contained three huge sixes but also three dropped catches which should have been taken. Keith Smith made a chanceless half century batting at three. Brian Joice (#218), back in A Grade for the second half of the season, was the best of the bowlers, taking 6-76 off 28 overs, bowling unchanged from the time he came on in the 11th over.
Waratahs collapsed in reply on Sunday, their top order decimated by Brian Bower and the rest bemused by Mark McCann’s leg spinners. Jack Trestrail (#303) and Bruce Mathieson (#250) added 46 for the sixth wicket in the only partnership of note.
Waratahs v St Peters - A Grade Final, 3rd/4th April 1976
St Peters 259 (David Mitchell 106, Keith Smith 61, Stuart McDowell 49. Brian Joice 6-76) defeated Waratahs 106 (Jack Trestrail 34, Bruce Mathieson 24. Mark McCann 4-38, Brian Bower 3-31) by 153 runs.

This was the killer Final that probably marked the start of the decline of Easts as a powerhouse in the 1980's. Q: The Tahs Inc, formerly Waratahs CC of Armidale are pleased to announce that nominations for the Waratahs Ian Campbell Scholarship are now open.
The Scholarship program identifies talented junior cricketers and provides then access to expert training and support from the number one cricket club in Sydney, Manly Warringah DCC.
Last year's recipient, Brooke Moran, a junior cricketer playing for Easts Cricket Club in Armidale, trained in Sydney, was accepted in the Manly Warringah Pathways Program, debuted for the Manly Warringah U19 side and subsequently represented NSW Schools at the U/15 and U/19 Australian Championships. At the end of the U15 Championships, she was named in the Australia U/15 All Star Team.
This is an outstanding program funded from members of the club and aims to put back into the game some of the delights we all experienced in playing for Waratahs.

Q: CricConnect Volunteer Recognition Series. Peter Langston - Waratahs Cricket Club Armidale

Peter Langston describes himself as a cricket tragic, but to those who have been part of the Waratahs Cricket Club in Armidale, he is far more than that. Over decades Peter has become one of the most significant figures in the club’s history, dedicating countless hours to both the playing and preservation of the game.

Peter joined Waratahs Cricket Club in the 1978/79 season as player number 357 and played his final match for the club in 1991/92, with a couple of seasons away when he was living elsewhere. On the field he was an upper to middle order batsman and an occasional bowler, known for his medium pace in-swingers.

Starting in B grade in the second half of the 1950's and graduating as far as A grade by the early 1960's, it was in A-Reserves that he had his major successes, where his 2,639 runs were the most scored in that grade. In all, he made nearly 4,000 runs for the Club.
Despite his regular run getting - 514 runs 1960-61, 624 in 1968-69 and 447 in 1969-70 - it wasn't until the very end of his career with Waratahs that he scored his first and only hundred. His 101 not out v Armidale Teachers College, was made even more memorable as he had carried his bat, one of only nine players to do so in more than sixty years of competition and the only one to score a century in the process. In the second innings, he retired on 52, one of only six players to make at least 50 in both innings of a match.
Like most handy cricketers, there was more to McIntyre than his batting. As a keeper, he made 53 dismissals and he had 6-20 as a part time trundler!
After he left Waratahs, he made a second legend at Centrals CC of Armidale, being one of the architects of their rise from easy beats of the late 1970's to 1st grade Premiers in 1985-86, beating ... you guessed it, the red hot favourites, Waratahs!

question
Q: Bob Barwick - cap #234 - The Tahs second lowest cap number, was born on this day, 4th of March, back in the days when Noah was just a lad who was keen on animals.
A keen mathematician and therefore a dreaded teacher in secondary schooling, Bob is one of Waratahs most revered members. Playing his first game in the 1970-71 season after previously playing for Easts CC in Armidale, he soon developed a reputation as a shrewd thinker on the game and a sharp card player. He also became one of the clubs most accurate scorers.
Often opening the batting, his record with the bat is a handy 2,277 runs in exactly 100 completed innings (of course). He was involved in 4 century partnerships in his 15 seasons, the highest being 140 with a teenage Angus Martyn (#416) for 3rd grade in 1983. He won two Premierships with Waratahs, both in 2nd grade, one as a young man and one as a veteran.
Bob was also a more than useful leggie with 102 wickets at 14.74 and a best of 7-30 against his former club. In fact, only Mark Charter (#515) has taken more wickets breaking them from leg with his wrist. Throw in 59 catches and a deadly throwing arm and you can see how much he offered Waratahs lower grades.
Those 15 seasons weren't played consecutively, with interuptions from teaching, a business career in furniture - selling not sitting - and his kids, one of which, Adam, became probably the finest Waratahs fieldsman of all time. Bob's last played in 1992-93, so his influence at Waratahs was sustained.
Still mad on his cricket, you'll find Bobby Barwick at the Gabba every year watching Australia go round in Tests and quoting stats to bemuse, confuse and enthuse. Great Tahs man.

Q: THE SEMIS 1966-67 (A-Res Grade v St Peters)
On a wet first day, it was hard going for Waratahs, with only opener Keith McIntyre (#129) making it to twenty as they struggled to 5-74. Hardy (5-23) and J Watson (3-3) closed the innings out quickly on the second day for St Peters, leaving the Saints with a low total to chase. Any confidence they had reckoned without Waratahs ace new ball bowler Col Marshall (#102) and first change K Lucas, who cleaned up St Peters (Marshall bowling unchanged through the innings), interupted only by a runout to St Peters last batsman.
WARATAHS 99 (Keith McIntyre 24. B Hardy 5-23, J Watson 3-3) defeated ST PETERS 61 (Col Marshall 5-43, K Lucas 4-3) by 38 runs.
question
Q: 25th February is Graham Johnson Day (#207) at Waratahs CC of Armidale. His two highest scores were made on this day. In 1978, he played probably his finest innings for Waratahs, scoring 163 not out and taking Waratahs to the win against a strong Easts side, after coming to the wicket at 3-11 chasing 199. On that occasion, he had an unbeaten partnership of 124 with Brian Mair (#307) which took the side home comfortably, with just over 63% of Waratahs runs coming from Johnno's bat.
Eleven years later, he made 159 for 2nd grade, adding an all grades Club record 262 for the 3rd wicket with Martin Campbell (#490), this time just under 62% of the runs scored while he was at the wicket.
Other century partnerships were added over the years by Lyndon Strong (#337)/John Baillie (#330) and Phil Rees (#636)/Daniel Evans (#632) and Roger Roan (#176) took 7-12, his best bowling figures in a long Waratahs career.

question
Q: A couple of "onlys"for Waratahs CC of Armidale happened on this day, 24th February.

The only tie in Waratahs history happened in 1990 when 2nd grade tied their match with old rivals Easts. The Daffies batted first, making 169, with a rearguard half century from Phil Webb holding them together. Waratahs man of letters, Bob Hughes and youngster Jeremy Roach were the pick of the bowlers. Wayne Lankester and Matt Foster took the ball from new to old, with an opening spell of 50 overs, and reduced Waratahs to 5-52 before the second half of the order fought back. Foster returned for a second spell and removed Rob de la Motte with his first ball to end the match in a tie.

In 1979, Syd Philp carried his bat for the second time in his Waratahs career, the only player to do the very rare feat twice. He made 35 not out of Waratahs first innings 93 and was still there on 51 in the second when time ran out for St Peters as they pushed for the outright.

Q: WARATAHS CC of Armidale have some old memories to remember on this day, 21st February.

In 1953, Laurie Cooper and Ross Ridley rose to the challenge, adding a century partnership when A grade was in trouble against the strong Uralla side. It proved to be more than half the score and was just enough to beat Uralla - by 2 runs - and just sneak into the semi-finals.

In 1953, Tony Morris took 7-32, including the hat trick which gave B grade a dominant set up for an outright. In 1998, Ryan McDonald became only the third player to pass 150 in 4th grade as he dominated Easts bowlers and enjoyed James Harwood's mastery of the Easts batsmen in the outright win.

Q: ON THIS DAY (almost) in Waratahs history, two great efforts by all rounders, 29 years apart all but to the day, as the two best performances by a Waratahs player across a match happened in the middle of February.
