ON THIS DAY - 9th March

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | March 10, 2026

In 1957, MAX NIXON (#88) equalled the record set for the most ducks in a season, by John Dickson (#66) two seasons earlier. His 8th globe came in B grade v Public Service.

In 1963, KEITH McINTYRE (#129) and IAN STEWART (#169) added 131 unbeaten as Waratahs second A grade side held the mighty Uralla off from winning outright. On the first day, Uralla declared after Walter Taylor and Bede Ryan both made hundreds in a double century opening stand and had Waratahs 4-42 by stumps. Gordon Patterson did the early damage but Walter Taylor cleaned out the tail and Waratahs started their second innings 170 behind. McINtyre and Stewart both made half centuries in their reguard action.

In 1974, BRIAN JOICE (#218) routed Easts in A grade, taking his best figures for Waratahs with 9-46.

G LOWRIE (#228) made his only Waratahs hundred, with 108 not out for B grade v St Peters.

In 1968, BRUCE KELLAWAY (#213) played his only season for Waratahs. Usually a Uralla star, Kellaway had a huges season and in this game, the last before the Finals, he not only top scored with 82, but took 5-20 in Churches second innings as Waratahs wrapped up the Minor Premiership. Churches were a strong side, with Don Foster and Brian Joice opening the bowling and a handy batting line up but were wiped out on the first day by Tom Cooke (197) and Terry Mackenzie (#54) bowling unchanged with the new ball. GREG RUSSELL (#131) held 3 catches in the innings. Waratahs batted to ascendacy with Kellaway and Graham Johnson (#207) both making half centeries. The diversity of the Waratahs attack was underlined by Kellaway and spinner John Roberts (#115) doing the business in the Churches second innings

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
