THE FINALS - B Grade v Churches, 7th/14th April 1962

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | April 16, 2026

In a long, long season of 26 games - B Grade played as one day games until the Finals series - Waratahs did some good work with the bat, Bruce McClenaghan (#74) making 628 runs and Ray McIntyre (#100) Graham Hooper (#101), Don Foster (#155) and Stuart Stanley (#104) all making over 300 but McClenaghan’s 67 against Tadcoop in February was the top score.

The season belonged to Foster, with an all time New England CA/ADCA record of 132 wickets, 123 of them in B Grade. He took five in an innings on an incredible 13 occasions, including 10-22 v Public Service, the best bowling in an innings in any grade by a Waratahs player.

All had seemed in Waratahs favour, Foster and Dick Russell (#132) slicing Churches to small pieces, with a 43 run partnership between Edwards and Hamel being only one of two to make double figures, but Waratahs made a dreadful start, with McClenaghan, Stanley and Brian Barrett (#117) gone with only 8 in the scorebook. McIntyre had dropped anchor, Foster smote some quick blows but left after only six deliveries. Hooper, the most consistent batsmen of the season, continued the attack, adding 40 with McIntyre and seizing the momentum back from the Churches bowlers and at 4-60, the Premiership looked to Waratahs for the taking.

Graeme Philp got through to Hooper’s pads and there after, Hamel removed the rest, Waratahs losing 6-22 and the title. McIntyre, stoic to the end, could only get red ink.

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
