ON THIS DAY - 3rd Januray

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | January 03, 2026

In 1953, LAURIE COOPER (#2) became the first bowler to take ten wickets in a match as Waratahs responded to losing first innings points on the first day held before Christmas, by winning outright on the second day held in the New Year! Cooper's 4-36 was followed by 56 opening the batting on day two and then 6-40. 10-76 and a fifty meant he was also the first player to be entered on the All Round Best Performance in a match list.

In 1970, GREG RUSSELL (#131) made 172 of A-Res grade's 318 on the first day against Teachers. Paul Muldoon (#188) made his highest scrore for Waratahs. On the second day, John Russell (#89) and Allan Cox (#160) both took bags as Waratahs recorded what was at the time their biggest win in A-Res grade. It was eventually topped sixteen years later.

Waratahs v Teachers - A-Res grade, 3rd & 10th January 1970

Waratahs 318 (Greg Russell 172, Paul Muldoon 51, Ray Reeves 37, John Russell 23) beat Teachers 92 (John Russell 6-17, Ray Reeves 3-27) and 47 (Allan Cox 5-20)

In 1987, MICHAEL CONNOLLY (#293) made 109 of 1sts 7-169 against Easts in a one day game. Although getting out to his own bunny - R Sattler - he took 26 off Peter Owen's only over. Given that 1sts then bowled tightly and won by 32, with Tim Muldoon holding three catches (inlcuding two from older brother Michael), we are still paying royalties to Dougie O.

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
