ON THIS DAY - 9th February

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | February 09, 2026

In 1963, with W DANGAR (#106) hitting five sixes in an innings of 88 not out, JOHN FAILES (#107) played the anchor in an grade record 8th wicket partnership of 107 unbetaen as A grade beat ... Waratahs! It was the only season Waratahs fielded two sides in A grade and even then, only for the second half of the season. Waratahs A-Res grade side was leading the comp when one of the two University sides dropped out of A grade and they were promoted to fill the hole in the draw. In doing so, they took NO POINTS with them. Both sides finished mid field for the season and University, with all their eggs in one basket, won the A grade! In this game at Lambert Park, the Seconds scored heavily on the first day and had the Firsts 5-67 and then 7-187 until Dangar's blazing innings.

In 1974, JOHN DONNELLY (#231) took career best figures of 7-37 as A grade rolled Ex Services for less than a hundred, taking 4 catches in the innings as well, including three of them caught and bowled.

In 1985, JACK TRESTRAIL (#303) made 95 before being run out as 2nds made a handy total against Uralla which was to prove insufficient on the second day.

In 1991, BEN CAMPBELL (#489), CHRIS PINE (#568) and CHRIS RIDLEY (#576) added a grade record 134 for the 7th wicket against Churches. Unfortunately, no scoresheet is available for the game.

In 1sts, both GARY CLARKE (#285) and PAUL MELVILLE (#556) held 3 catches in an innings v TAS.

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
