THE SEMIS - 3rd Grade v Ex Services, Major Semi 1992
Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | March 22, 2026

Waratahs were odds on to win the Premiership after an unbeaten season, a washed out second day draw in December the only game 3rds didn't win. Playing without a second grade side at the decision of the ADCA grading committee, they fielded 28 players through the season, not usually the sign of a successful side. The vast majority were young players being blooded for 1st grade. Six of them averaged over 50, with skipper Bede Ryan making a club record season tally of 933 runs @ 84.8, icluding five tons. Not bad for a bloke in his late fifties.
Ex Services had been their only true opposition all season, with ex-TAS player Robert Pollard having his best season in Armidale. The mainstay of Waratahs innings came from an unexpected quarter when opener, wicketkeeper Chris Duncan, scored his only century for the club. There were handy contributions from Graham Frost (#333) and Mark Tanner as the Ex Services bowling fell away despite Pollard's 26 overs.
Ex Services reply would have been nothing without an innings of real geniius played by Pollard. His unbeaten century batting at three only attracted partial and unlasting support and the veteran Roger Roan took the last five wickets for Waratahs to win comfortably. Importantly, it was achieved with little contribution from Ryan, something all and sundry though was impossible.
