ON THIS DAY - 14th February

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | February 14, 2026

In 1959, the second of the two Uralla sides playing in A grade were outclassed by Waratahs. It didn't help that they played short on both weeks or that DON PAUL (#37) made 95 in the middle order and youngster Jeff Walsh (#84) took his only A grade pfeiifer in the first of their two identical innings scores.

After things were close for the first innings, B grade beat Postal Institute thanks to a commanding performance of 10-31 by TONY MORRISS (#78). "Big Tall Tony" defended a low first innings score to secure the first innings points and improved batting from Waratahs second time around at least set a target. Morriss and Nigel Richardson bowled unchanged with the new ball and made sure the Postal Institute didn't deliver. GRAHAM HOOPER (#101) didn't celebrate the win as hard as others, collecting a pair.

In 1970, BRIAN CONNOLLY (#226) made the first of two Waratahs hundreds and in only his second innings for the Club. He had left Southies in Tamworth with a hundred in his last innings, so it was two tons in three innings for Smooth. His innings underpinned A grade's 230 and then Brian Joice (#218) did his usual hatchet job of the TAS boys which not only included Wallabies superstar and TAS teacher Greg Cornelson but also future league commentating legend David Morrow and a young fellow batting at 11 called Brian Mair.

In 1981, GRAHAM FROST (#333) and ROGER SATTLER (#378) added 112 for the 3rd wicket against Centrals, with Xavier Tras playing a substantial role in the partnership. Frosty was left stranded on 98 against a bowling line up that included The Colonel, Steve Reading (#322). Rain ruined the match by not only taking out day one but shortening day two as well, but not before Flop Fraser suffered an ignominious fate.

In 1987, PAUL WISEMANTEL (#529) made 94, adding 155 with ALBERT HOFKAMP for the 3rd wicket against Centrals. After being behind by 123 runs on the first innings, 3rd grade pulled off a miracle win with a match that turned completely on its head. Tim Squire (#528) took 8 wickets for the match.

In 1998, IAN ELLIS (#733) made 103 in a hard hitting innings which had limited support where seven players failed to make double figures and yet 3rd grade still made a competitive total and a big first innings lead, scoring at more than five an over. Earlier in the afternoon, Grant Harlow (#721) took a pfeiifer to limit Hillgrove Colts. Colts did as they liked on the second day when the match was over, with former team mate Scott Murphy making a hundred for Hillgrove Colts.

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
