ON THIS DAY - 20th February

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | February 20, 2026

In 1960, ERIC SMITH (#82) cleaned up Churches, 7-31, as A grade managed to turn the game around after a low first innings total.

In 1965, GEOFF MARSHALL (#156), a young star who had set records coming up throught the Waratahs ranks, completed an outstanding match for A grade v Uralla. After making 94 batting at #3 on the first day, he bowled 31 eight ball overs on the second afternoon, starting with the new ball and taking 4-100 including two caught and bowled.

In 1982, GLEN SCHAEFER (#373) made a sparkling 115 as 2nd grade overcame Centrals. Chasing 189 and at one stage being 4-69, Schafe led a counter attack that destroyed Centrals at nearly six an over and only ended when he was run out after adding 108 with MARK O'SHEA (#369) for the fifth wicket.

In 1988, GRAHAM PATTERSON (#346) made 118 v YCW as 4th grade recorded their highest ever score, thanks to further handy contributions from Peter Bloomfield (#531), Matthew Allom (#506) , Mark Charter (#515) and Xavier Tras. Patto and Bloomfield added 132 for the 4th wicket and Allom and Charts 121 for the 7th. For Bloomfield and Allom, it was their highest scores for Waratahs. YCW tried their hardest to loose outright with the spolis shared.

In 1993, MARK TANNER (#573 - pictured) made 55 not out to wag an otherwise stubby 1st grade tail on the first day against St Peters and then on the second, subbing in as wicket keeper, held six catches, including five in St Peters first innings. That places Spanner on par with Steve Hadfield (#524), Peter Morse (#19) and Ross Ridley (#8) with the second most dismissals in a match and just one behind Ross Ridley (again) and Jason Kelleher (#415) with 7. Whilst Kelleher held 7 catches, the master gloveman Ridley had 5 stumpings in his total!

LACHLAN BENNETT (#587) held 3 catches in an innings as 4th grade chased some leather on the first day but then batted with mastery on the second and was unlucky not to get a hundred, adding 157 with opener Rohan Patterson (#584) for the 3rd wicket after Waratahs were 2-12. Tony Yeomans (#649) and Bob Hughes (#511) hit the winning runs and enjoyed some batting practice.

Not so happy a day for Peter McDonald down in 5th, who bagged a pair as Waratahs bowlers only took one wicket across two St Peters innings and 290 runs!

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
