THE SEMIS - 2nd Grade v Easts, 24th/25th March 1990

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | April 05, 2026

Waratahs had an odd season, with Bede Ryan (#503), Graham Johnson (#207), Michael Connolly (#293), Graham Frost (#333) and Mark Dymock (#523) all scoring runs at different times before ending up in 1st Grade for the semis. Only five batsmen had more than five innings for the season and none had more than nine, so the batting line-up was never settled at any point. Likewise, only three bowlers racked up more than seventy overs, with Ryan’s 75 being the most and no one took twenty wickets. Easts had not beaten Waratahs in two encounters, with Ryan and Connolly dominating the December game and the rematch a few weeks earlier ending in a rare tie.

Despite the previous results, beating a very settled Easts side would be difficult but Jeremy Roach (#521-pictured) and the veteran Bob Hughes (#511) gave it their best shot, with Roach recording his best bowling performance in any grade for Waratahs. Easts were best served by Todd Lockeridge but their total was subpar for their season’s efforts and Waratahs were in the game … until they batted. Skipper Tony Sheen (#543) and the consistent Steve Hadfield (#524) gave them a good start but once Matt Foster had them both, the middle order collapsed. Chris Duncan (#609) and last man Rob de la Motte (#608) managed to get Waratahs past the hundred with a last wicket stand of 37 but Waratahs were never in the hunt, Easts using only three bowlers.

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
