ON THIS DAY - 7th March

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | March 07, 2026

In 1970, BRENDAN McGEE (#200) took Armidale Teachers College for an uncomfortable ride in the last game of the regular season. Batting at 3, he had the afternoon out, scoring an unbeaten century while supported by a swag of others as A-Res grade won by 207 runs. John Russell (#89) took a bag on the first day.

ATC 131 (F Campbell 50. John Russell 6-53) lost to Waratahs 8-328 (Brendan McGee 102x, J McCann 46ret, Keith McINtyre 43, Bob Brennan 35, Paul Muldoon 30ret, R Frith 23ret)

In 1981, ANDREW DAVIS (#354) and PAUL BROCK (#391) added 119 for the 4th wicket as A-Res grade blitzed St Peters, making 300 hundred in an afternoon and then batting on the second day to 5-379, as Brock got his hundred. Davo's 89 was his highest score for Waratahs.

WARREN ALLEN (#360) and TONY PATTISON (#383) added 100 for the 7th wicket for B grade v O'Connor, Waratahs had started with 3-5. Greg Johnson (#352) led the recovery and constructed a fine innings after opening, well supported by Bill Maguire (#401) and Robert Branschied (#390) until the 7th wicket partnership put the icing on the cake. This B grade side contained five players who would go on to play first grade, including a very young James Campbell batting at #11. The following week, O'Connor, aided greatly by Paul Ryan who was at the very early stages of hoisting his star above the horizon.

In 1987, TIM SQUIRE (#528 - pictured) and Paul Wisemantle (#529) set a grade record for the 6th, adding 106 for 3rd grade v St Peters after Waratahs were 5-45. Squire's 47 was his highest score for Waratahs and the partnership was greatly aided by Simon Undries, who made second top score in the Waratahs innings. The Waratahs attack shared the wickets and had first innings point early on the second day, before collapsing in just 23 overs to Steve Carey, despite Wisemantle again top scoring in an innings which had only one other batsman making double figures. St Peters were never in the chase, with Mick Keevers removing 3 to 7 and taking 5-24 for the outright points.

In 1992, PAUL ZAGAMI (#624) bagged a pair for 4th grade against St Peters. Phil Allen (#625) made a fifty in Waratahs first innings 129 and although a gettable target, St Peters were 7-84 in reply at stumps. Dowse and Person added 203 for the 8th wicket to give the Saints a massive lead. Waratahs started well with Graham Patterson (#346) and Graham Wilson (#425) putting on 85 for the first wicket but from there, a Watson pfeiffer destroyed a nine man Waratahs. Zagami collected his second duck when he was last man out.

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
