ON THIS DAY - 25th February

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | February 25, 2026

In 1978, GRAHAM JOHNSON (#207) made his highest A/1st grade score, 163 not out v Easts, an innings which opposition player Ray Eddie always described as the greatest he ever saw in Armidale. Easts had made 199 on the first day, thanks to an even 100 from Mal McLean. Denis Hurst (#320) took a pfeiffer, dismissing four of the top six. On the second day, Easts looked odds on for the points, with Johnson resuming after coming in at 3-11 just before stumps. Denis Hurst helped add 44 and Brian Connolly (#226) 55 but the game was very much in the balance when Brian Mair (#307) joined Johnno at 6-134. From that point, it was a batting masterclass from the senior man, as they added 124 unbeaten until Easts ran up the white flag. Mair made 41 of the partnership.

In A-Res grade, MICHAEL CONNOLLY (#293) made 92 v St Peters, his second ninety in consecutive seasons and more than 400 runs for the season for the first time.

In B grade, LYNDON STRONG (#337) and JOHN BAILLIE (#330) added a grade record 143 for the 4th wicket v Uralla.

In 1989, MARTIN CAMPBELL (#490) and GRAHAM JOHNSON (#207) both made hundreds when they added the highest ever Waratahs partnership (all grades) for the 3rd wicket, 262 for 2nds v Uralla. Coming together at 2-32, they completely blotted out the Uralla bowlers and allowed Waratahs to declare in time to get both Uralla openers before stumps. For Marty, his 102 not out was the second of his two Waratahs hundreds and Guiley's159 was his second highest score. His highest was made eleven years earlier on the same date! Uralla only had one partnership of note until Bede Ryan (#503) and Guiley went quickly through the tail. Its an odd thing, but their have been 4 double century partnership for the 3rd wicket in A-Res/2nds.

ALBERT HOFKAMP (#476) took 4 catches in a Uni Vets innings that was dominated by the vetrean Nick Stephenson's hundred. He took two from Tim Bindley (#393) and two from Doug Menzies (#481), whose 4-32 was his best bowling performance for Waratahs. Bert also took 3-70 off 19 and top scored in Waratahs reply.

In 1995, PHIL REES (#636) and DANIEL EVANS (#632) added 148 unbeaten for the 2nd wicket for 5th grade v Norths/St Peters, both making unbeaten half centuries. Earlier in the day, ROGER ROAN (#176) had the best bowling figures of his Waratahs career, his off spin netting 7-12 of 13 overs as N/StP folded. Declaring 75 in front, Waratahs looked like they were going to be frustrated on the second day but Daniel Evans (#622), Adrian Perkins (#743) and Roan scored at near to 7 an over as they charged home for the outight points. Waratahs took 20 wickets and lost only three for the match.

Almost everyone got runs for TAS as 2nd grade chased leather. Wicketkeeper ANDREW WILLIS (#675) managed 4 catches in the TAS innings. Jason Fittler (#564) was the pick of the Waratahs players with 4 wickets and a half century in the forelorn chase.

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
