ON THIS DAY - 17th February

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | February 18, 2026

n 1962, A grade defended 120, thanks to ERIC SMITH (#82) taking 7-33 and bowling them to an 11 run victory. D Lang (#138) and D Bucknell (#133) made quick runs to set up the outright chance but Churches clung on.

In A-Res grade, club stalwart HUGH FERRIS (#32) made a pair after Waratahs collapsed in their first innings. Nigel Richardson (#103) was the only batsman to make double figures and he made half Waratahs 79. Second time around it looked like St Peters were headed for the outright before an unbeaten 75 run partnership by alrounders J Boundy (#118) and Bob Brennan (#127) saved the day.

In B grade, openers Bruce McClenaghan (#74) and Stuart Stanley (#104) were the only two Waratahs batsmen to make double figures in a pautry first innings. Waratahs were right in the game when they had Dumaresq 6-22 thanks to Geoff Marshall's (#156) 5-18 and BRIAN BARRETT's (#117) 3 catches, but Browning, who had bowled Waratahs out, then saved the Dumarseq boys with the bat.

In 1990, TIM BINDLEY (#393) turned a 3rd grade game on its head after Waratahs comfortably took the first innings points against St Peters. After the tail wagged in Waratahs first innings, they fought back when Albert Hofkamp (#476) was introduced into the attack with St Peters 2-92. Bert and Roan Roan (#176) took the last 8 wickets for just 42. With less than fifty over left in the game, Bindley set about St Peters, making his hundred in less than 25 overs and adding 127 for the 2nd wicket with Bob Barwick (#234). With two of St Peters team leaving believing the game was decided by the first innings result, Waratahs left themselves 16 overs to bowl the Saints out, which helped by two run outs, they did in 11. St Peters 36 was the lowest score ever agianst a Waratahs 3rd grade side.

In 5th grade, Sunil Reddy (#622) took a very creditable 6-25 in Ex Services huge first innings total. Waratahs were then rissoled cheaply and Services went at six an over before the declaration. Skipper Tony Bennett (#355) found willing support in Derek Brotherson (#578), who half century was his highest Waratahs score in a partnership of 132 with Bennett for the 2nd wicket. Despite Services using 9 bowlers, Waratahs held on to avoid the outright after a late clatter of wickets.

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
