ON THIS DAY - 3rd March
Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | March 03, 2026

In 1956, VIC SNELL (#9), one the Originals, after decimating the always strong A grade Uralla with 7-11 as they crumbled for just 45, took 3-27 in the second as they fought back, claiming 10-38 for the match. In an incredibly rare game, Waratahs kept Walter Taylor to just 12 & 1 and were able to sneak home for the outright by 3 wickets. Doug Johnstone (#47) had a good game with the bat, making good contributions in both innings of a low scoring game but it was Ross Ridley's (#8) bludgeoning second innings fifty (five 6's) which finally swung the game in Waratahs favour. Taylor grabbed four late wickets to give the Tigers a chance but Waratahs just lasted.

In 1962, GORDON LEE (#70) bagged an inglorious pair for A-Res, run out without facing in the first innings and caught one handed by R Hanlan, a fill in for YCW, hooking the first ball he faced in the second. A Ray Reeves (#143) century in the first innings, supported by Keith McIntyre and Dick Chisholm (#141) and late runs from J Boundy (#118) set Waratahs up and early strikes from Boundy and Tony Morriss (#78) made the win look like a foregone conclusion at 5-61 but a rallying partnership between Irvine and Dodds dragged YCW back into the game. Boundy returned and finished the game with his 3rd career hatrick!

In 1990, a classically elegant MICHAEL CONNOLLY (#293 - pictured) 1st grade hundred, home from the big smoke after a spell with St George, sunk Easts from what looked like an impregnable position. After the loss of an early wicket chasing Easts 266, Conno and MARK DYMOCK (#523) completely blotted out the Easts attack adding 170 for the second wicket. Graham Johnson (#207), Bede Ryan (#503) and Gary Clarke (#285), three of the most experienced hands ever to play the game in Armidale, steered Waratahs safely home to a notable victory. Hats of to David Nosworthy, whose body lasted through 22 overs for Easts.

In 5th grade, JAMES HILLARD (#592) stoically carried his bat, making 67 not out of Waratahs improved second innings of 113, which was played two men short. In a match where only four batsmen across two innings made double figures for Waratahs, Hillard's effort was exemplary. TAS won by an innings.
