Sutherland’s third grade team played their first home match of the 2003-04 season at Sutherland Oval against Western Suburbs on 4 October 2003. Western Suburbs won the toss and sent Sutherland in to bat. Their skipper must have known something, because the score at tea was 8/97 off 37 overs. First ball after the break, the score was 9/97 and number 11 Daniel Marandola was heading to the crease to join number 7 bat Aaron Phillips, who was 26 not out. In 69 previous matches for the club, Daniel’s highest score was 18.

The history of Gordon District Cricket Club – August 1915 – The Prior brothers

On August 5, 1915, William Prior enlisted in the AIF to fight in World War 1. While this event was very similar to the more than 400,000 enlistments of Australians in the war it was a very traumatic one for the Prior family. William was the first of three brothers to enter the war.

The three brothers were the sons of William Prior (Senior) and Selina Prior who lived at a property by the name of “Trewinnia” in Broughton Road Artarmon, just a short walk down to Chatswood Oval.

Saturday 16th October 2010 saw one of the great first grade debuts in the long history of Stockton & Northern Districts Cricket Club and it was a debut that nearly didn't happen.
The debutant was Benn West and his teammates didn’t know what was happening when the former Randwick-Petersham bowler rushed to his car and left the ground before the start of play against Merewether on Saturday.
It was West’s first appearance for the club.
Captain Terry Crittenden explained that West had snapped a knee brace and had to buy another one.
He returned 40 minutes later and took a match-turning 7-52 from 16 overs, including the big scalps of Simon Moore (47) and Troy Goodwin (11).
Not a bad effort for a man with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The injury forced the 33-year-old to sit out last season, but, with the aid of the brace, he is now able to bowl.
‘‘The brace really helps,’’ said West, who works as an exercise physiologist.
‘‘Some people function fine without an ACL, depending on the hamstring strength they have.
‘‘I spent a year or more strengthening my hamstring, my quadriceps and all the muscles surrounding the knee. At some stage I will get a reconstruction but not this year.’’
West played four seasons in Sydney, working his way up from fifth grade, and has taken up a role as bowling coach at Stockton, mainly working with the young quicks.
‘‘Coaching is something I enjoy,’’ he said.
‘‘Through my background in exercise physiology I can help with strength training, conditioning
and core strength which is exactly what you need to do as a bowler in preparation for a game.
‘‘After missing last season it is just good to be back involved.’’

Ross Leonard - Appreciation Post

Today, we acknowledge one of our game’s greatest servants.

After more than a decade of Junior Vice-Presidency, and many more years spent in roles spread across the committee, Ross Leonard has decided to take a step back, as confirmed at this years AGM.

Ross began as a volunteer in the 1980s when he took on the role of coach for his sons’ cricket teams at the Eastern Districts Cricket Club. From then he joined the Newcastle Junior Cricket Association and served as Vice President, Secretary and undertook other roles for some 20 years. With the amalgamation of Newcastle City & Eastern Districts Cricket Club in 2001, Ross has since served on the committee of Newcastle City including many years as Junior President. His unwavering support has ensured the ongoing success of the junior programs at the club, with over 160 youngsters playing cricket each week.

During his many years of service, Ross has performed an endless number of tasks. From coaching junior teams which have contained players who have progressed through the Grade ranks, some continuing on to higher honours, opening ground facilities, marking wickets and setting out boundaries on game day or providing support and guidance to any young (or old) player and coach alike, just to name a few.

Ross’ tenure has been one of great progression and success at both Junior and Senior levels. His expertise has grown our club into one of the largest Junior hubs in the Newcastle region. We have claimed 4 junior Club Championships and have been the pinnacle for continued growth in Girls’ cricket.
We aren’t the only benefactors of Ross’ stellar history of volunteering in the cricket community. He has had heavy involvement with the Newcastle Junior Cricket Association also and as a result of this, is a life member of both the NJCA and NCCC.

While Ross felt he simply “didn’t have the energy” to carry on in the Junior Vice-President role, he isn’t just stepping away immediately. Typical of the man, he will be “sticking around” to hand the reigns over to the new incoming Junior Vice-President, Richard Wood.

There is plenty more that could have been said about Ross’ invaluable contributions to our Club, and cricket in general, but we think the picture has been well painted. We know Ross will still be around the grounds, checking in and supporting from the sidelines.

To you Ross, we say Thank You!
