Q: On 15th September 1813 thirty-eight-year-old Henrietta Gregory was found guilty in the Old Bailey of forging a one-pound note and was sentenced to transportation and 14 years servitude in the colony. She was just one of 162,000 so dispatched. However, this sentence and subsequent transportation, routine at the time, was to change the course of both Australian men’s and women’s cricket because accompanying Henrietta was her nine-year-old son Edward William Gregory.

Edward William, reported to be somewhat of a cricket tragic, was to marry Mary Ann Smith in 1832 and they had six children, two of whom, Dave, born 15 April 1845 and Ned, 29 May 1839, were to become pioneers of Australian cricket.

Q: Rare footage of Imran Khan batting for Sydney University against Waverley in November 1984

In Round 6 of the 2023-24 NSW Premier Cricket season Eastern Suburbs will play host to Sydney University at Waverley Oval.

In a trip down memory lane to 1984-85, Waverley Cricket Club (now Eastern Suburbs) played Sydney University in a two-day Saturday, Sunday game on 3 and 4 November 1984.

Saturday, day one, Waverley Cricket Club batted first but all eyes were on NSW international recruit playing for Sydney University Imran Khan.

Below are the scorecards for the game along with the rare footage of Imran Khan batting on the Sunday when Sydney University defeated Waverley by 5 wickets.

In the footage you will see Imran Khan talking to former Cricket NSW CEO the late Bob Radford who we assume was the mastermind to recruit Imran Khan to play Sheffield Shield cricket for NSW.

question
Q: In early 1899 the Waverley District Cricket Club played its most important game since its entry into the Sydney grade competition in 1894/95.

The match, against the strong Paddington club, took place on 4 February and 11th February at Waverley Oval. Both clubs boasted test players including Victor Trumper, Monty Noble and Jim “Stumper” Kelly for Paddington and Syd Gregory, Frank Iredale and Sep Carter for the home side. There were also several current first class players in both teams. It was expected to be a match of the highest calibre.

The winner of this match was tipped to go on to win the premiership. Waverley had twice been runner up in the competition and expectations were high this would be the club’s breakthrough season.

question
Q: Michael Maclennan began his grade cricket career in 1990/91 when he joined Waverley/Eastern Suburbs after growing up in the Sutherland Shire in Sydney.

In 25 seasons of grade cricket Michael has won three premierships, a Benaud medal for the player of the match in the first grade grand final and was selected as one of the top 50 contenders for the Waverley/Eastern Suburbs team of 125 years

At what age did you make your first grade debut in grade cricket and what can you remember about the game?

I was 21 and it was the last game of the season against Mosman at Waverley Oval. It was memorable as at the end of the first days play Brett Lee bowled an amazingly quick spell and had hit two of our players in the helmet and one had been taken off the field. Greg Matthews was the captain and asked if I wanted to be nightwatchman!!! (Crapping myself) I was “yeah sure”, Mark Patterson stepped in and said no “all good I’ll go into to bat.”

Think I scored about 10 and took a catch.

question
Q: The 2020-21 season marked the 125th anniversary of Eastern Suburbs (Waverley) Cricket Club. It also marked the hundredth year of the famous Eastern Suburbs cricket coaching class.

The coaching class was established by Dr Les Poidevin in the 1921-22 season, the year after Easts won its second 1st grade premiership. The “Flying Doctor”, as he was known, joined the Waverley club at the age of 44 in 1920, scored a century in his first game at the SCG against Paddington. Dr. Poidevin was to go on and lift Waverley Cricket Club out of the doldrums, captaining the first grade to 3 premierships in a row, one of only two clubs to achieve such a feat in the competition’s history. In his second season, due to his agitation, the committee agreed to establish a coaching class, the first of its type in Sydney.

Seeing the boys being rewarded for all their hard work, given the challenges thrown at everyone this year was pretty special. Q: Record Run Chase Sets Up Easts Cricket Record Season

In 2003 the greatest run chase in the history of Premier Cricket was achieved by the Eastern Suburbs (Waverley) Cricket Club and became the launch pad for the club’s most successful first grade season.

The game took place at Waverley Oval on 11 and 18 October against the powerful Western Suburbs Cricket Club led by future Australian test captain, Michael Clarke. Both sides were brimming with talent. The Easts team included three players who were to go on to represent their country with distinction. James Marshall for New Zealand, Brad Haddin for Australia and a 16 year old tyro, David Warner. There were also three other players with first class experience. To add to the international flavour the flamboyant “crooked finger of doom” Billy Bowden, test umpire, officiated.

Q: Josh Holt made his first grade debut for Eastern Suburbs as a wicket keeper batter on 26 October 2002.

Josh is Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club first grade player number 597.

Who was the best spinner you had the good fortune to keep to?

Without a doubt Adrian Tucker. He was a freak. Tucks had an incredible ability to not only have wicket taking deliveries but also had the skill to tie down and frustrate batsmen for long periods. He was incredibly accurate.

question
Q: In 128 years of Sydney Premier first grade cricket only two players have scored more than 1000 runs and averaged over 150 in the same season. The first was the immortal Victor Trumper in 1897/98 for Paddington and the other was Geoff Boycott, playing for East’s (Waverley) in 1976/77. And only one player has scored seven centuries in a first grade season, Geoff Boycott, Waverley, 1976/77. Boycott did all this in just 15 innings. His fifteen innings also included two half centuries.

It was a phenomenal season. An exhibition of batting which has not been seen since. In 1976/77 Boycott amassed 1,160 runs at an average of 165.71, an East’s Cricket Club record that still stands today.

But first let’s go back to the beginning.

Q: Tony Greig was subsequently approached and sent a telegram by the management committee. The offer was modest financially but did include accommodation and a car. Tony agreed but shortly after was appointed captain of the England team. The club thought this might mean circumstances had changed and arranged a special committee meeting in the back rooms. On the newly installed club telephone committee member Phil O’Sullivan put in an overseas call to Tony. The committee held its breath and as Phil recalls the conversation went something like “Hi Tony, its Phil O’Sullivan, Waverley Cricket”. “Hello Phil good to hear from you”. “Tony first of all congratulations on being selected to captain England, it must be quite a thrill” “Yes it is Phil. I am quite pleased”. “Tony we are a little concerned about how and if you will still be coming to Australia now that you are in another role. Are the terms we sent you still acceptable?” To the relief of the assembled committee Tony replied “Sure Phil, let the boys know all is set here to arrive on 16th September and I am looking forward to a great season”. Tony was true to his word. He had made a commitment and that was that.

Q: Glen Giddings - you can always do better

Glen Giddings made his first grade debut for Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club on 24 November 1996. Glen is the Eastern Suburbs first grade player number 571.

Easts v Northern District. Running battle between A. Hook and Mark Pratt (skipper and wicket keeper). Pratty did his normal welcome to the crease routine. Hook told Pratty to “relax brother and enjoy what your about to see, as you have the best seat in the house”. Hook smashed us to all parts. Reminding Pratty he had the best seat in the house after every boundary he hit, relentless. Northern District 9 dec -346. The following week, M. Pratt 116no (unusually quiet during his innings) East 7 dec -351 with about an hour of play left. As Pratty walked from the field he took turns pointing his bat at every single Northern District player, giving them advice about how to play the game. A. Hook, got Mark’s special attention.
