Q: The following article is an extract from our 2006 publication “Cricket in Black and White: 110 Not Out: The history of the Western Suburbs District Cricket Club”.

As soon as the 2000-01 season opened, it was obvious that Western Suburbs' young team had developed beyond promising into a genuine contender for the premiership. Michael Clarke began the season with a brilliant 108 against Mosman, leading his side to a comfortable victory. Andrew Sargeant compiled a nerveless half-century to seal victory over Bankstown in the next match, and in the third round, against Fairfield, new captain Michael Swan (68) and Clarke (86) were outstanding in another winning side.

Q: Peter Ferguson, Western Suburbs Player #423, passed away on Saturday, September 28th, at the same time that Wests were hosting a T20 double header at Peter’s beloved Pratten Park.

Ferguson made his debut in the Firsts on December 3, 1967, at the age of seventeen. He may have made the Firsts earlier, but the club deliberately didn't want to rush his promotion.

The exciting young left arm wrist spinner, could sharply turn his leggies and he complimented this talent as a lively all round cricketer . At age 11, Peter played his first games in Wests Under 16’s. In 1964-65 he took 123 wickets for the club; 43 in the Saturday Under 16’s competition, 18 in the A.W. Q: After the excitement of the centenary season, Western Suburbs endured five lean seasons. In the five years from 1995-96, Wests never reached the top half of the Club Championship, and First Grade's position on the table hovered between tenth and sixteenth. The fact that Second Grade spent these five seasons anchored near the foot of the competition table suggested that the Club's greatest problem was a lack of depth in its First Grade squad.

question
Q: Western Suburbs has always had an uneasy relationship with Grade cricket's other junior competition, the Poidevin-Gray Shield. Established in 1926-27 for players under the age of 21, this competition was originally intended as a means of feeding cricketers from junior associations into Grade clubs. At that time, few Grade clubs were able to fill an under-21 team from the ranks of their own members, but that position changed over the years, and so did the character of the competition. It is now a unique opportunity for players from different grades to play together, so that a typical Poidevin-Gray team will include cricketers who play in every Grade from Firsts to Fifths.

question
Q: The AW Green Shield is named for a President of Western Suburbs, "Abbie" Green. Apart from cricket, Green's abiding interest was Barnado's Homes, the orphanage charity, so a cricket competition for boys under the age of 16 is an apt memorial to him. Originally, the competition had been played for a trophy known as the "Cush Herford Shield", but after Green's death, the trophy was named for him.

The Green Shield competition has always been both an obligation and an opportunity. It is part of the way in which a Grade club fulfils its obligation to develop junior cricket in the district it represents - but it is also a precious opportunity to attract gifted young players as recruits. Since 1935, most of Wests' outstanding homegrown players have emerged through the Green Shield team.

Q: The 1994-95 Centenary Season - Western Suburbs District Cricket Club

Western Suburbs limped unconvincingly towards its centenary season in 1994-95. First Grade finished 18th in 1991-92, then 13th and 15th, and the Sydney Cricket Association's Committee of Management made no secret of the fact that it believed there was no future for Wests in the Grade competition. Q: Cricket is acknowledged as the game that continues to produce statistics in greater numbers and variations than virtually any other sport. Yet, the excitement and enthusiasm for those ‘moments in history’ continues unabated.

It was more than one of those ‘moments’ on Saturday 2 November 2019 at Pratten Park, Ashfield as Western Suburbs second grade went out to bat against Sydney. Spectators were to watch ninety overs of near chanceless batting as opener Isaac Taylor and first drop batsman, Jason Hughes, put on 291 runs for the second wicket.

The partnership is the highest second-wicket effort in any grade in the history of Wests. Very impressive, considering the Club started way back in 1895.

The ‘291’ removed one of Bob Simpson’s entries in the Magpies’ record books. Simmo and Grahame Windley posted an unbeaten 226 partnership, in first grade against Waverley, for the second wicket in 1967-68.

Q: Ben Gorham, son of Wests’ legendary Scorer Mal ‘Pencil’ Gorham (First Grade Player #447), is currently celebrating his 200th game for the Magpies in the Fourth Grade two day match versus Penrith at Blick Oval.

Ben started with the black and whites in season 2009-2010 in the Metro Cup and has subsequently appeared in all grades, except Firsts, in his 200 appearances.

An ideal clubman, Gorham has, especially in the early days, played in two games on a weekend: grade on Saturday, backing up in Metro when played on a Sunday.

Ben co-coached Wests Green Shield squads for two seasons and still lends his support to the Club’s juniors both on and off the field. As captain of the very successful 2023-2024 Fourth Grade side (currently placed second,
one point behind Manly), Ben has the opportunity to guide the fortunes of his young proteges on field.

To see him lead the group in the club song after a Magpie victory is a sight to behold! During his 200 game career, Ben has scored 3,341 runs at an average of 20.25, accumulating 14 scores of 50 plus, with a highest tally of 94. As well, he has taken 206 wickets, at the economical average of 22.44. On top, he has taken 83 career catches.

The good news is that Ben Gorham, a young man who exemplifies the Magpie Mantra (“Better People Through Cricket”), shows no sign of slowing up and it would be a just reward for him to captain the Fourth Grade to a premiership.

Q: The words were not only being sung for him - but only because of him. Belted out with rarely seen vigour and joy, from faces of strangers he had never laid eyes on eight hours ago.

All the while, the little blond kid in the corner smiled innocently. Not sure what to make of it all. Almost embarrassed being the centre of attention. Not quite game enough to try to fumble over the lyrics on a sheet someone had shoved in front of him moments earlier.

Who could blame him? He had barely spoken a word all day, let alone feel the urge to break out in full voice now.

The kid was Macksville's Phil Hughes, playing his first Sydney grade game for Western Suburbs' second XI in the last fixture of the 2005-06 season

Archie Gray, a hugely talented leg spinner lost his battle with brain cancer on 8 November 2022 at just 17 years of age.

Q: A rather weather beaten old 'photo was delivered to Pratten Park recently and, fortunately, the Groundsman, current Wests' First Grader, Nick Cutler, was there to receive it.

The photograph (attached) and lovingly restored as well as possible by Wests Archives, was taken by a local Dubbo photographer at Easter 1930, and it depicts what he has called the 'Southern Star' and the visiting Magpies Players, Manager and Scorer lined up on the runway.

The monoplane was actually called the 'Southern Cloud', a ‘sister ship’ of Kingsford Smith’s ‘Southern Cross’, a high wing monoplane and, in fact, one of five purchased by 'Smithy' for his fledgling ANA fleet. The 'plane's details can be seen on the photograph caption.

Among the tourists was Selby Burt, Western Suburbs’ Player #237 and the highest wicket taker in the Club's history (793 wickets at an average of 16.45), in a career that stretched from 1923 to 1942. Selby's great, great grandson, Tom Burt, is Wests' First Grade Player #699.

Q: Western Suburbs can lay claim to 33 Test Internationals passing through the gates of Pratten Park and playing for the Magpies…

20 of these International Players represented Australia while active as a Western Suburbs Player and, remarkably, two Angus Fraser and Monty Panesar were selected for England while in the Wests ranks.

Mitchell STARC, who debuted in Wests First Grade in 2007, continues to spearhead the Australian attack.

However, it all started in March of 1877, in the First Test match in Melbourne, when Tom GARRETT debuted at age 18 years and 232 days…which still makes him the youngest representative to play for Australia against England. Tom was educated at Newington College while the School was still at ‘Newington House’, in the Sydney suburb of Silverwater.

Q: Western Suburbs 4th grade traveled to Fairfield oval to take on Fairfield-Liverpool in the 3rd round of the 2023/24 season.

For the third week in a row Wests lost the toss and were invited to bat first. The first over of the innings set the tone for Western Suburbs with Damien Guild hitting a 4 and 6 through and over mid-wicket. The first 2 rounds Wests struggled to build a strong platform in the top order, with the top 3 being challenged this week. Damien and Flynn Nicholls must have taken this personally with a magnificent opening stand of 205 at close to a run a ball. Flynn the first to fall caught behind for 81 (including 8 fours and 1 six) his first grade 50. The onslaught continued with Abhinav Kamsali joining Damien at the crease. Damien was dismissed a short while later with the score 241 for a better than run a ball 130 (including 13 fours and 2 sixes) his first ever hundred.

Western Suburbs won the toss and without hesitation batted first, however found themselves in some trouble being 2/39 after 10 overs with wickets to Talha Yaseen and Ryan Rajesh putting Fairfield Liverpool on the front foot.

Will Zakostelsky continued his run of super form adding 38 with the middle to lower order contributing to get Wests to 8/219 at the completion of their 50 overs. Q: Western Suburbs and Hawkesbury 3rd grade team kicked off their 2023-24 season with a nail biting 50 over game at Blick Oval.

Hawkesbury batted first after being sent into bat on a wicket that would have any seamer and spinner licking their lips.

question
Q: Former England and Western Suburbs fast bowler Angus Fraser fires up against Randwick in November 1994

I look back at my two winters playing for Western Suburbs with a huge amount of pride and joy, and my Magpie cap proudly hangs on a hook next to my Middlesex and England caps in my office at Lord’s.

In 1988/89 I spent much of the summer with Brad McNamara and Scott Hookey. We spent a few Saturday evenings at Carmens in Miranda, so there are some stories I will leave alone. I do remember getting a bollocking from Greg Matthews one Saturday whilst Wests were batting for sunbathing on one of the grassy banks at Pratten Park. He took his shirt off and showed me the damage the sun can do. It was a good point, quite forcibly made??

In 1994/95, having been omitted from England’s Ashes squad, I positioned myself in Australia in case any England players got injured. They did, and I got called up to the squad. Before getting called up I played in a game against Randwick at Coogee Oval.

On first innings Wests won a low scoring game and I took five or six wickets on a slow pitch. I then got called up to the England touring squad.

In an attempt to provide a bit of colour to the news a national paper spoke to one of the Randwick players about batting against me. The bloke completely nailed me on every front – no pace, didn’t do much with the ball, easy to play etc etc. I wouldn’t have minded, but Wests won the game, and I bowled pretty well. I bit my lip with the media when I got a few wickets in the Sydney Test that followed.

Q: Vale Betty Davidson

Everyone connected with the Western Suburbs District Cricket Club is saddened by the loss of one our nearest and dearest, Betty Davidson, who passed away peacefully on Saturday 1 July 2023.

The late Alan Davidson AM MBE and Betty were married for seventy years.

Such a formidable combination, with Betty at Alan’s side as they organised functions and Alan conducted his duties as President of Cricket NSW over a period of 33 years.

Prior to that, during Alan’s illustrious cricket career, Betty was the rock their family was built on as Alan toured the world.

Always bright and cheerful, Betty Davidson made an impression on all she met. We’re all better people for knowing her.

She was a good judge of horse flesh, carefully scanning the form and almost inevitably seeing her $1- selections get home each Saturday.

Rest in a well-deserved peace, Betty Davidson.

You will always be in our thoughts and prayers.

Q: Western Suburbs pile on 400 runs against Campbelltown in October 1987

It was the game the Sydney Cricket Association trialed orange balls across the first grade games. The ball seemed to be a bit harder than the norm and with the runs we had on the board and a fast bowling attack that included David Gilbert, Chris Killen, Murray Radcliffe and Brad McNamara I was really looking forward to keeping on day 2.

The scorecard above says there was rain on the Friday afternoon but my recollection is the game was called off on the Thursday afternoon after rain early in the week!!

question
Q: An outstanding wicket-keeper, either standing up to the stumps or standing back to the quick bowlers, Greg Dyer’s selection for New South Wales was delayed by the fine work of another excellent keeper from Wests, Steve Rixon.

Within seasons of his first appearance for New South Wales, Dyer made his Test debut against England in 1986-87, and he held his place throughout the following season, playing in Australia’s successful team in the 1987-88 World Cup Final against England in Calcutta.

An aggressive batsman (and compulsive hooker), he often contributed handy runs in the lower order, including a lively 60 against New Zealand in Adelaide.

His performances for Australia were uniformly impressive, and did not warrant his abruptly dropping at the end of 1987-88; it was generally thought that he was made a scapegoat for an incident in the Test against New Zealand in Melbourne, in which Andrew Jones was given out caught by Dyer, although Television replays revealed that the ball had bounced.

Half-way through the following season, he was summarily dropped from the New South Wales team, of which he was then captain, although he unquestionably remained the outstanding wicket-keeper in the state.

The dignified and graceful manner in which he dealt with these arbitrary and unjust decisions won him many admirers.

Joining Western Suburbs in the Green Shield team at the age of 13, Dyer reached First Grade two years later. He was an inspirational captain of First Grade in 1984-85 leading his team to the final.

Greg Dyer is the current President of the Australian Cricketers Association.
