Sydney Grade Cricket scores - Round 9 1990-91 season - 29 December 1990 and 5 January 1991

Pictured - Wayne Mulherin who bowled 35 overs 14 Maidens and took 2 wickets for 53 runs for Petersham in their drawn game against Northern District

Mulherin was in tremendous form as he'd taken 5 for 11 off 18 overs in the previous round against UNSW and in round 7 against Campbelltown he took 4 for 4 of 14.5 overs. Incredible bowling figures.

Interesting to note there was no Christmas - New Year break with day one on the last Saturday of 1990 and day two on the first Saturday in 1991

Like most Jay Kangar fell in love with cricket at a very early age and he just wanted to be on the field.

He batted and bowled. He was the wicket-keeper and if his team was batting he was happy to the umpire.

At 27 he traded the white pants in for a black pair and became an umpire in Queensland Premier Cricket.

What advice would you offer a young 20-year-old who has the ambition of umpiring Test Cricket?

Patience as it’s a long way to the top to umpire Test matches and ask as many questions as you can to learn as much as possible.

My best grade team - Chris McLean 1990s - 2000s

We played a very aggressive brand of cricket and were very successful. We definitely won a lot of games that we should not have purely through the “mental disintegration” side. It certainly did not encourage sportsmanlike behaviour. I think they made me captain one year just because I could deal with the judiciary better than other guys in the team…

The team is definitely biased toward the Sandgate players because we won so often and those who played well against us consistently over those years. There are heaps of players who got me out for fun who are not in this team - Brett Boardman, Rendle O’Connell, Sticks Argent, Darin Turner, Brett Henschell… it is a long list - and Gators who were instrumental to our success like Paul Pink, Brett Mortimer, Murray Kent, Trent Ryan and Jon Isoardi.

It's a casual and a late post...

Kaya has made an impressive start to the season, scoring 69 not out (10x4s and 4 x 6s) in her first match from just 35 balls. Despite the season having only begun two weeks ago, she has already accumulated 253 runs and has been dismissed only three times.

This year, Kaya is focused more on achieving different milestones rather than pursuing awards. She's working working hard and closely with her mentors to explore various strategies and approaches for the season ahead, so it will be exciting to see what she accomplishes.

Kaya's versatility is on display as she competes in multiple age groups and against both boys and girls, despite being only 11 years old. She has already demonstrated her skills against U13 rep boys teams like Manly, Hornsby, Hawkesbury, Fairfield, and more, achieving decent rankings in both batting (14th) and fielding (3rd). Notably, her U12 mixed team has won three out of seven matches, showcasing the girls' prowess in batting, bowling, and fielding compared to the boys.

Please wish her luck in all her experiments and endeavors this season! 🤞🤞🤞

David Chardon made his first grade debut for Petersham Marrickville Cricket at the age of 16 during the 1967-68 season and went on to become one of the greats of Sydney Grade Cricket,

In a career spanning 1967 to 1990 David Chardon took 793 wickets at an average of only 19.67 and took 5 wickets in an innings on 37 occasions. Incredibly David only played one first class game for NSW.

David is 8th on the list of all-time wicket takers in NSW Premier Cricket. In fact, the bowlers that sit above David are all spinners and that makes him the leading fast bowler in wickets taken in the history of NSW Premier Cricket.

The much-anticipated match 1 of the ICWC Asia Cup of Wheelchair Cricket 2023 between Nepal and Sri Lanka unfortunately had to be abandoned due to inclement weather. The teams had to settle for 1-1 points each in this rain-affected encounter.

The inaugural ceremony, held earlier today at the TU International Cricket Ground in Kathmandu, Nepal, witnessed esteemed dignitaries from the cricket fraternity. The chief guest for the ceremony was Mr. Roshan Kumar Singh, Vice President of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN). Mr. Singh's presence added prestige and excitement to the event. WP Connect Golf Day at North Ryde Golf Club on Friday 3rd November 2023

It’s Robert Radley former cricketer at Gordon and Mosman Cricket Clubs in Sydney.

I wanted to share some details around a little community we’ve created called WP Connect

WP Connect first came about in 2016, beginning as The Hope Challenge after a friend in our community lost their battle with mental health. While a shared loss initially brought a bunch of mates together, many shared our experience and felt the same drive to do something about it.

WP Connect hosts various events including The Hope Challenge and an annual golf tournament in hopes of raising awareness of mental health within the community. As of 2023 it has raised over $100,000 in donations to the Black Dog Institute; a proud result from a small community.

Black Dog invests in research, education, clinical services, and digital tools to discover new solutions and create genuine change.

Sydney University secured its advancement in the T20 competition with comfortable home wins over Gordon and Hawkesbury. The University pitch, it has to be said, wasn’t ideal for T20 cricket, being on the slow and low side (which is, in fairness, pretty normal for this time of year) and Gordon bowled well to contain the Students until Tim Cummins took control with an outstanding, unbeaten 68 from 38 balls. Cummins drove imperiously and, picking the ball to hit, cleared the fence four times to give his side a presentable total. Gordon’s chances appeared to rest on openers Axel Cahlin and Tym Crawford, and Crawford began brightly with a couple of meaty strokes. But the pitch always looked likely to suit Kieran Tate’s skiddy, stump-to-stump pace, and he bowled Crawford with his first delivery. Tate also removed Louis Bhabra in a double-wicket maiden, and when Will Salzmann bowled Cahlin, Gordon was deep in trouble. The game rather fizzled out after that, enlivened mainly by Devlin Malone’s mopping-up and Nick Larkin’s spectacular direct-hit run out of James Newton

Western Suburbs Cricket Club has a very proud history on connecting with young cricketers making their way from the country regions to the big smoke of Sydney.

Since the 1970’s Gary Gilmour, Steve Rixon, Peter Toohey and the late Phillip Hughes have journeyed from the regional townships of NSW to join Western Suburbs and ultimately go onto the wear the Baggy Green and play Test Cricket for Australia.

There have also been several players go on to represent New South Wales and James Rainey Munro Mackay may well have been the first.

James, known as Sunny Jim Mackay because of his charming disposition and happy temperament was born in Northern NSW in Armidale in September 1880.

At a very early age, he built quite the reputation as an outstanding batsman and in 1900/01 season before moving to Sydney his scores included 104*, 128*, 108*, 200* and 65* - 605 runs without losing his wicket.

Kasturi Kolte lives in Pune, Maharashtra, India and has worked in IT for the past 15 years.

Kasturi is a very passionate sports fan and loves cricket. She has played in India and in the United Kingdom during her time studying in Birmingham.

Who were the best 2 batters you’ve played against?

Mithali Raj – She has always been an inspiration to the young and old and me when I started playing. She had the best technique with batting along with determination of scoring every time she came to bat.

Harmanpreet Kaur (Current captain of India) – played against her when she used to play for domestic cricket. She always carried a great confidence and the perfect body language required for a batsman. She had aggression in her batting which she maintained throughout making the bowlers nervous

Week 2 – ‘The Opening Spell’

History makers, wicket takers and record breakers. The men’s premier cricket season is back in full swing!

First ball – Simmons roars into record books!

Fairfield-Liverpool first-grader Jaydyn Simmons has hit his way into club and competition history, striking 134 (not out) runs from just 66 deliveries against a Blacktown bowling attack at Hurstville Oval. The knock, which included 13 fours and 7 sixes, made Simmons Fairfield-Liverpool’s first ever T20 centurion, and puts him at second on the list of all-time highest individual scores in a NSW premier cricket T20 fixture. Simmons’ total sits just five runs behind James Crosthwaite, who scored 139 (not out) for Manly Warringah against UNSW on November 11, 2016. The Fairfield Liverpool innings finished at 3-246, again second only to the 5-265 UNSW totalled against Eastern Suburbs on November 22, 2020.
