The Chappell Foundation will distribute at least $1 million in 2023 to frontline charities in the struggle against youth homelessness, following our most successful Annual Dinner.

The 6th Annual Dinner at the Sydney Cricket Ground on September 13 raised $480,000 net of expenses, more than $50,000 ahead of the previous best result.

Chairman Darshak Mehta made the $1 million pledge at the conclusion of the dinner, which pushed beyond $5 million the total raised since he and Greg Chappell founded TCF in 2017.

Darshak praised TCF’s homelessness charity partners as “the invisible heroes and heroines for transforming the lives of hundreds of desperate, young homeless people”

During October 2023 all custom made butterfly English willow cricket bats are $599.

Butterfly English willow makes an outstanding cricket bat that is very durable and pings very well. The Butterfly name comes from the stain on the face of the cricket bat that is caused from branch pruning whilst the tree is growing over approximately 15 years.

It looks like a butterfly in shape and it actually strengthens all of the willow surrounding it. It adds character and depth to the willow which contributes to its unique appearance.

At Cooper Cricket we have been using butterfly English willow for many years now and we have had many players in many grades using it with outstanding results. It also makes for a great training bat as it is very durable and affordable.

The October 2023 discount represents a $200 saving from our regular price of $799.

The Weekly Wicket is back for another week with Sam Hole interviewing one of, if not the, greatest ever contributors to our club, current President Andrew Fraser.

Frase takes us through all the high’s and lows of his involvement with the club, his biggest highlights (which will surprise some) and what he thinks the future holds for both our club and NSW Premier Cricket.

Frase is known by many as the fun loving, always quick with a comment character, but his love for our club is greater than anyone could ever know across a 45 year span.

The NSW Men’s Cricket Team will begin their Marsh Sheffield Shield season at Cricket Central this week, an historic maiden First-Class match at the state’s home base – and the likely debut of a returning star.

The 12-player Blues squad, led by skipper Moises Henriques, will play Queensland, with the match starting at 10.30am on Wednesday and broadcast live on cricket.com.au, Foxtel and Kayo.

The squad includes three players that were not part of the Blues’ final Shield match of the 2022/23 season - Jackson Bird, who moved back home to NSW from Tasmania, Daniel Hughes, who has returned from the injury that ended his last summer early, and former Test star Kurtis Patterson, who has regained his spot in the 12.

Interviewer: Who else influenced your career?

Brian Charles Lara: Former West Indies opening batsman Joey Carew. When he saw me playing for the Fatima College junior teams, captained by his sons, he took keen interest in me, got me membership of Queen's Park, the island's strongest club team, and then monitored my development.

Apart from cricket, I was a good soccer player and wanted to win selection to the national youth training squad, but my father insisted that my future lay with cricket and persuaded me to stick to it.

When my father passed away in 1988, I was deeply hurt and then decided to make a lasting impression on the game.

I dedicated my 375 to his memory. But for my father, I would have been nowhere.

In another scintillating display of power batting, Randwick Petersham today cemented its place at the top of the Pool A ladder in the 1st Grade Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 Cup competition at Coogee Oval. Two matches were played and the home team ran out convincing winners in each. Highlights were the outstanding 101 not out from Jack Wood in the match against Western Suburbs while skipper Jason Sangha hit a majestic 68 not out playing Penrith after being dropped on the boundary before he had scored.

In the first match, the Panthers made 7-136 from their 20 overs with Riley Ayre (2-19 off 4 overs) and Jason Ralston (2-27 off 3), the principal wicket-takers. In reply, Anthony Sams with 46 off 36 balls hitting 4 fours and a 6 and Sangha, whose 68* came from just 49 balls with 4 boundaries and 4 big tonks over the fence, put on 108 for the second wicket. The winning runs came up in just 17 overs.

Western Suburbs and Hawkesbury 3rd grade team kicked off their 2023-24 season with a nail biting 50 over game at Blick Oval.

Hawkesbury batted first after being sent into bat on a wicket that would have any seamer and spinner licking their lips.

Bilal Khan struck early with two wickets however with the seamers bowling a tad short and leg side both Western Suburbs off spinners were quickly on show.

Will Chesterfield and Hameed Kherkhah proved difficult to get away and Hawkesbury’s Ahmed Badat did the right thing by taking the attack to the bowlers before sending one to deep mid wicket and out for 18.

On the 23 November 1985 I made my Sydney Grade Cricket debut playing for Western Suburbs 3rd Grade against North Sydney at Blick Oval. 109 runs and a win and life in Sydney was off to a good start. 8 days prior I’d finished the HSC in Armidale in Northern NSW.

Next game we played Northern District at Blick, and I was run out for 27 and it was my last game at Blick Oval.

But now 38 years later I’m back baby.

Tomorrow, round one of the 2023-24 NSW Premier Cricket season and I’ve got the privilege of skippering Western Suburbs 3rd grade against Hawkesbury at Blick Oval.

The past 2 seasons I've captained Western Suburbs 2nds and now I’m returning to where it all started.

I can’t be sure, but I really don’t think much has changed, a coat of paint in the dressing sheds perhaps.

Whilst the excitement and nervous energy of starting a new season is not as high as it once was, it’s great to be still playing and hopefully contributing.

The game is a lot younger these days and why I believe it’s so important to have as many experienced players as possible supporting and helping the youngsters.

It’s terrific to see several players in their 50s out on the park, challenging themselves and guiding the youngsters.

Tony Clark at Bankstown, Phil Melville at Northern District and Steve Wark at St George are incredibly into their 5th decade of continual grade cricket. I, along with Simon Waddington at Manly, Brett James at Sutherland, Mark Lewis at Western Suburbs, Matt Lewis and Trevor Whittall at Campbelltown have all had a spell and returned. There may well be others in their 50s playing NSW Premier Cricket and apologise if I’ve missed including you. I also know of many others contributing greatly I country cricket NSW.

It starts again tomorrow. In 1985 I needed a Gregory’s to get to Blick. Hopefully the lads will stick around for a beer or soft drink after the game. Giddy up, cricket is back.

Rob and Sean have a unique record with Manly taking all 10 wickets between them on their debut in 5th Grade.

Rob has lived in Newcastle for the past 26 years. Rob plays in the Newcastle Grade cricket competition with his sons Will & Noah, they play for Newcastle City Cricket Club. Rob captained the 3rd grade team last season.

We sat down with the original “Parko” for a chat through his time at Manly.

North Melbourne Cricket Club Team of the Century

In December 1999, a panel of former North Melbourne Cricket Club players and administrators sat down to select a North Melbourne Cricket Club team of the century. Five hundred and twelve players in all, from Ernie Bean's team of 1900, to the team which Earl Eddings led on to the Albert Ground for the final match of 1999 have represented this club during the past one hundred years. Whilst debate will always rage when any team is selected, here are the twelve truly great players selected.
