My Best Grade team - Andrew Gode 2007 to 2020

I made my debut for Valley District Cricket Club in 2007 and over the years have played with some fantastic players.

With some down time I thought I reflect on who would make my best team. It was also a bit of fun and brought back some great memories.

Here’s my best Valley team from players I played with, in batting order:

1. Nick Kruger

My first captain at Valley. Brutal opening batsman who punished bowlers throughout the competition before moving to Tasmania where he ended up being part of a Sheffield Shield winning team. Rather sizeable cranium as well

Craig Simmons retired from cricket on Saturday 2 December 2023
To say he has been a fabulous player is an understatement.
Craig is the best player I have coached that was never picked for Australia simply because very short, minded administrators would not afford him the opportunity that they sometimes gift to players of far less performance or talent in first class cricket.
However, that short sighted response by two associations never dimmed his enthusiasm for the game and as a result his energies were directed to his beloved Rockingham Mandurah and Gordon in the Sydney premier league whereby the way he holds the record for the most runs in a season.
I remember watching his first BBL hundred from my lounge room and jumping up and down screaming with joy, I was so happy for him.
His performances for the Mariners are legendary including taking the side to a first-grade premiership which by the way was a far cry from when the club was rebooted
In the lead up to the Rockingham first 1st grade season I was asked who should open the batting first game. I was adamant that the first player picked at the top of the order would be Craig.
Needless to say, there was a bit of sniggering going on until they watched him bat in the first net session. All of a sudden everyone knew he could play.
To Paul Simmons and Sue Simmons you have been so supportive of your son and have ridden the ups and downs with him over a very long career. You should be very proud of the person he has become.
Congratulations Craig Simmons on your retirement.
It’s time to have a rest.

Nepean | Penrith Cricket Club caps 1973-79

In 1973 the Nepean District Cricket club entered the NSWCA Grade competition wearing this cap.

In 1978 the club was supported by the Penrith Rugby League Football Club and was renamed Penrith DCC and wore the more familiar caps - click below

The 3rd season for Nepean/Penrith DCC looked promising and 1st grade start with an outright win against Western Suburbs in October 1975. Ken Hall starts his career well. John Burnitt was also a Five eight for the Penrith Panthers, and Lawrie Renshall was also playing league for the Panthers

Alex Murphy made his first grade debut for Parramatta District Cricket Club during the 1999/2000 NSW Premier Cricket season.

Alex is Parramatta First grade player number 523.

Who are the two players you admired most in terms of skills and competitive spirit in the competitions you played?

Daniel Jackson enormous heart and a willingness to play injured. Was still playing 1st grade for Parramatta in his mid 40’s and causing plenty of trouble for opposing batsmen.

Nick Bertus - has been a big part of turning Parramatta District Cricket Club into a competitive force. One of the best batsmen in the competition for at least the last 6 years and has won many games off his own bat. Gives back to the game by looking after the Parramatta Junior Development program with Luke Dempsey another long-term Parramatta First Grader.

A Legspinners Diary - NSW Over 55s Kangaroos - Division Two Champions

A magnificent week of cricket & camaraderie at the National O55s Championships, Christchurch NZ, Nov 23-27, 2023. The tournament included 16 teams in two Divisions, with NSW and Qld each sending 3 teams, Victoria, WA, SA and New Zealand two teams each, and one team from each of ACT and Tasmania. Each Division was divided into two Pools of four teams for the initial round-robin format, with the top teams in each pool to play off for the chocolates. I was a member of the triumphant NSW Kangaroos, who came through Pool B undefeated and claimed the Division 2 title by trouncing the highly fancied NSW Waratahs in the final. Yes, yes, I know we were all a squad and “your triumph is my triumph” etc, but we all knew we were in 3rds and they (the 2s) were expecting to put us in our place, so it was pretty sweet!

Mark Butler is the proud owner of Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club first grade cap number 68 after joining the club in 2002/03 after playing many years at St Kilda Cricket Club.

In a Victoria Premier Cricket Career spanning 1988 to 2007 Mark played 91 first grade games and scored 1,829 runs at an average of 20.32 including 8 half centuries and he took 76 wickets at 28.78.

Mark’s love of the game has seen tour and play in many parts of the world so let’s find out more about his journey.
