The Inspiration for Scott Boland

Exactly 150 years after Charles Lawrence and his Aboriginal team toured England, Scott Boland, who had been plying his bowling for a few years with Victoria, discovered his family link to the Gulidjan tribe near Colac in Victoria’s Western District. His maternal grandfather was Aboriginal and had been adopted into a white family.

Boland and his brother Nick made their way to the tiny town of Harrow, from where they were driven fifteen minutes away to a bush water-hole area where the star of that 1868 tour, Johnny Mullagh, had spent much time in his final days. A large, hollowed-out tree is where he is said to have sought shade on his visits there. Mullagh’s reputation among locals, and those who know his story, places him at the top of legendary Indigenous Australian sportspeople. The trip meant much to the Boland brothers, whose pride in their recently discovered heritage and culture was growing.

Celebrating 50 years - Penrith Cricket Club team of the first half century

Saturday 8 October 2022 - What a brilliant night we had celebrating 50 years of our club!

What was evident last night through our guest speakers was how much playing for Penrith has meant to them and their families. We heard former first grade captains reflect upon their time with the club and talk about the importance of playing with their mates! So many fun stories and conversations continued into the early hours of the morning.

Michael Wholohan did a great job as MC highlighting the history of the club.

Congratulations to our club legends selected for the Penrith Cricket Club Team of the First Half Century! Each member's phenomenal record, achievements and contribution to the Club are inspirational and proudly represents the essence of our Penrith Club.

Could you Imagine turning up to Howell Oval on Saturday morning to face this very formidable team?

Nathan Price started his cricket journey in Newcastle and made his first grade debut for Wallsend when he was only 16. After a number of years Nathan made his way to the big smoke and joined the seasiders at Coogee Oval, the famous Randwick Petersham Cricket Club where he became first grade player number 67.

In his time at Randwick Petersham from 2009 to 2019 Nathan scored 5,263 runs at an average of 37.06 including 9 centuries and 27 half centuries

He was selected in the NSW Futures League teams and has been a very proud member of the NSW and National Indigenous squads for many years.

He’s back home in Newcastle and making a tremendous contribution to where it all began at Wallsend Cricket Club

This fortnight Howzat Building Waratahs in History Q&A saw us speak with the newest Life Member of the club Tim Cruickshank (LM #53), a club member and player for 19 seasons. Tim played for the club from 1997/98 to 2016/17.

Tim is the only MWDCC player in the 145-year history to score over 10,000 runs (10,502) for the club, He amassed this total from 354 innings with a career average of 32.92. He has 14 club 100+ innings and 67 club 50+ scores as well. To put this in perspective we only have 3 players in the club history to score over 8000 runs.

Tim captained our 1st grade to their first premiership in 27 years in 2014/15.

Tim was most recently seen at the ex-player event at Manly Oval where he spent some time with his old mates enjoying the current 1st grade team having a victory.

Michael Back is UNSW Cricket Club first grade player number 67 having made his first grade debut during the 1985-86 season.

A wicket keeper batter with high energy levels Michael was affectionately known as “Stan” and today Michael is an oncologist (cancer specialist) who manages people affected by brain cancer. We dip our lid Michael.

Can you recall a catch or stumping that still fills you with pride and puts a smile on your face?

Rod Bower had a long history of dominating us with big off-drives. Jungle theorised that he was weaker off his pads so we decided to bowl continuously outside leg stump to the point of annoyance. Eventually after yet another one from seamer Tony Pratt moved two feet outside leg stump he immediately exploded on both bowler and umpire so took the opportunity to throw down the wickets…out stumped. The shouts on the field were only outweighed by the subsequent noise coming from the dressing room.

Graeme Vimpani made his first grade debut playing for Hawthorn during the 1991/92 and had 3 seasons with the Hawks before moving across to Colling, now Camberwell Magpies.

Graeme spent 8 season with the Magpies scoring 4,231 runs hitting 11 centuries and 16 half centuries for the club,

In 155 games in first grade cricket Graeme scored 5,442 runs at an average of 35.33 and hit 12 centuries and 23 half centuries.

In 1995/96 Graeme made his first debut for Victoria and in 30 first class games he scored 1,598 runs at 29.59 and hit 3 centuries, highest score 161 and 5 half centuries.

He also played 19 one day games for Victoria scoring 467 runs with a highest score of 92.

My Best Grade team - Aaron Maynard 1999 to 2009

I made my first grade debut for the Sunshine Coast in 1999 as a 16 year-old and had 6 great years at the Scorchers before making the move back to my home state of Victoria where I had 2 season at Geelong then a move to Melbourne where I finished my last 2 Premier cricket seasons at Camberwell.

I played with and against some great cricketers and with 3 great clubs in their own unique ways (with many great bus trips) and have got memories I’ll cherish for a lifetime. So picking a best side wasn’t easy.

1. Troy Dixon (Captain) Sunshine Coast

A great leader of men. You walked ten foot taller knowing you were going into battle with Dicko. No doubt opposition bowlers feared having to run in to bowl to him.

In early 1899 the Waverley District Cricket Club played its most important game since its entry into the Sydney grade competition in 1894/95.

The match, against the strong Paddington club, took place on 4 February and 11th February at Waverley Oval. Both clubs boasted test players including Victor Trumper, Monty Noble and Jim “Stumper” Kelly for Paddington and Syd Gregory, Frank Iredale and Sep Carter for the home side. There were also several current first class players in both teams. It was expected to be a match of the highest calibre.

The winner of this match was tipped to go on to win the premiership. Waverley had twice been runner up in the competition and expectations were high this would be the club’s breakthrough season.
