Q: UNSW Cricket Club - A Tribute to Peter Richardson 1943-2009

Although there have already been lengthy and numerous celebrations of Peter Richardson’s life, it is only appropriate that a tribute is now paid in the UNSWCC’s Annual Report. We will never do his life justice, nor his contribution to this club…but may we try. Tim Richo was going to pen a broader and more meaningful preface to the following comments from various Club people who were close to Pete over the years. He wasn’t able to do that in time for the Annual Report so the following is pretty UNSWCC specific – obviously so much more could be said about Pete’s wonderful life that extends so far beyond his magnificent contribution to this Club and its culture.

question
Q: Michael Back is UNSW Cricket Club first grade player number 67 having made his first grade debut during the 1985-86 season.

A wicket keeper batter with high energy levels Michael was affectionately known as “Stan” and today Michael is an oncologist (cancer specialist) who manages people affected by brain cancer. We dip our lid Michael.

Can you recall a catch or stumping that still fills you with pride and puts a smile on your face?

Rod Bower had a long history of dominating us with big off-drives. Jungle theorised that he was weaker off his pads so we decided to bowl continuously outside leg stump to the point of annoyance. Eventually after yet another one from seamer Tony Pratt moved two feet outside leg stump he immediately exploded on both bowler and umpire so took the opportunity to throw down the wickets…out stumped. The shouts on the field were only outweighed by the subsequent noise coming from the dressing room.

Q: Greg Livingstone is UNSW first grade cap number 41 and he made his first grade debut in 1976/77 and over the next 18 years he accumulated 7,628 runs averaging 30.88. He scored 6 centuries and 42 half centuries and his highest score was 201 not out.

In all grades Greg scored 8,952 runs for UNSW at 32.67 including 12 centuries and 51 half centuries

Greg was a member of two UNSW first grade winning premierships and is a very proud Life Member of the club and continues to make a significant contribution.

question
Q: Jamie Baker made his first grade debut for UNSW during the 1981/82 season and went on to score 4,180 first grade runs at an average of 31.91 including 7 centuries and 14 half centuries. In all grades at UNSW Jamie scored 5,171 runs.

Jamie moved to Adelaide in 1991 and continued playing Grade/Premier Cricket.

Who are the two players you admired most in terms of skills and competitive spirit in the competitions you played?

I really admired the older guys who even after long careers were still striving every ball and had their tricks. Mick O’Sullivan (RIP MoS, such a great bloke and canny flight bowler), Ken Hall, Dave Chardon, Greg Hartshorne and Greg Matthews.

question
Q: It was the season before World Series Cricket and there were plenty of legends playing Sydney grade. Andy Roberts, Geoff Boycott, Allan Border, Doug Walters and Rick McCosker played much of the season. Another seven had or would play for Australia, while another 23 had played or would play Shield cricket for NSW.

It is the week Lenny Pascoe gets his call-up for Australia – he has been chosen for the 1977 Ashes tour of England. His great mate, Jeff Thomson, got that call-up five years back, and Lenny has given everything in that period to join him. Bankstown have not won a premiership in his time, and Lenny, great clubman that he is, wants one badly. Bankstown are a tough bunch, captained by Dion Bourne – uncle of Steve and Mark Waugh. Also in their side are Ken and Graham Thorpe – future father and uncle of swimming legend Ian Thorpe – and Steve Small, who is in the early stages of a fine career.

question
Q: The Saturday Sledge - First Grade Reschs Cup Match UNSW v Bankstown at Bankstown, 9 January 1994

University of NSW batted first, and after 50 overs were 8 for 217. Apart from the aforementioned Norbury, Matthew Phelps compiled 34, Matt Hayward much the same, and David Trafford hit out wantonly at the end for an unbeaten 26, which included two sixes, one of which was over a deep mid off/mid on area guarded by three of the blue and white enemy. Bankstown were all out in the 45th over for 168, a most capacious defeat for a team who lead the regular grade competition by 18 points, and for whom losing is as rare as a dry eye at a performance of Mahler’s “Unrequited”.
