Men go 4 from 5 to return to winning ways – Weekend Wrap 14th/15th October 2023
The tables turned across the weekend with a very different series of results compared to last round, as the men went 4 from 5 to return to winning ways while the women had a frustrating weekend despite a phenomenal run chase victory in W3s.
M1’s bounced back superbly from last week’s nail-biting defeat, with a bonus point victory against UNSW. Winning the toss and bowling, Josh Seward (2/34) struck early, before it was the spin duo of Bertie Foreman (4/28) and Joel Davies (2/22) who bowled brilliantly in tandem to turn the game in the Tahs’ favour. UNSW all out for 172 inside 42 overs. The Tahs’ run chase was off to the perfect start courtesy of some clean hitting early from Matt Brewster (53) and Joel Foster (34). With the bonus point in sight, the Davies brothers then combined to seal a bonus point victory for the Tahs, Ollie finishing 52no and Joel 17no.

John Loxton virtually had two careers - one up until July 1969 and one after. In the former he was a hard-hitting opening batsman for Queensland who scored 100 in his first Shield innings against a test-strength Western Australian attack in 1966. He scored a second in 1968 against a NSW side brimming with test players but was then struck a devastating blow to the head whilst batting in a match at Old Trafford the following year. That he was able to work his way back into the Queensland side for another 5 matches is testament to his skill & determination

The near-death experience prompted John to reassess his priorities and whilst he continued playing first grade until 1978, cricket never had quite the same importance as he focussed on family and forging a successful business career. Peter Devlin first captained a Randwick team in 1973-74, his second season in AW Green Shield. He went on to captain the side for four years ending up playing an amazing 35 matches over five seasons in Green Shield. He was also selected in the representative Combined Green Shield team.

Peter Devlin first captained a Randwick team in 1973-74, his second season in AW Green Shield. He went on to captain the side for four years ending up playing an amazing 35 matches over five seasons in Green Shield. He was also selected in the representative Combined Green Shield team.
He made his Grade debut in 1973-74 and within two seasons he was one of the better performed players in that team. In 1975-76 he had returns of 5-57 v Sydney and 7-44 the following match v Mosman. He was the leading bat with 427 in 3rd Grade in 1976-77 in a team which lost the Grand Final. Three seasons later he was the leading bowler in 2nd Grade returning 26 wickets with his right-arm medium pacers which included a 5-29 performance against NDs.

Adrian has won premierships at Baxter, he captained many teams and has a long association with Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association. He continues to contribute to cricket in the region as an umpire in the Association.
Who are the two players you admired most in terms of skills and competitive spirit in the competitions you played?
Darren Uccello - Baxter - An absolutely fierce competitor who set really high standards when he came to Baxter from Frankston. Wished I played more games with him.
Most young blokes always look up to their old man and I was no different. I always wanted to be as good as he was.

Western Suburbs 4th grade traveled to Fairfield oval to take on Fairfield-Liverpool in the 3rd round of the 2023/24 season.
For the third week in a row Wests lost the toss and were invited to bat first. The first over of the innings set the tone for Western Suburbs with Damien Guild hitting a 4 and 6 through and over mid-wicket. The first 2 rounds Wests struggled to build a strong platform in the top order, with the top 3 being challenged this week. Damien and Flynn Nicholls must have taken this personally with a magnificent opening stand of 205 at close to a run a ball. Flynn the first to fall caught behind for 81 (including 8 fours and 1 six) his first grade 50. The onslaught continued with Abhinav Kamsali joining Damien at the crease. Damien was dismissed a short while later with the score 241 for a better than run a ball 130 (including 13 fours and 2 sixes) his first ever hundred.

The match went well with Cranbrook recording a comfortable victory. It was another high standard schoolboy contest featuring centuries by Sam (Cranbrook) and Tommy (Aloys), plus a 5/for by Riley (Cranbrook).
I have umpired in the CAS 1st XI cricket competition since 2009-10 and have been the Convenor of the CAS Umpires’ Panel since 2016-17. On special occasions, we get a photo of the Captains, Umpires & Coaches, and the first photo is this sequence is from the recent Aloys v. Cranbrook match.
I would welcome enquiries from experienced umpires who may wish to join our panel, as we have room for two more umpires.

Another brilliant win last Saturday for Randwick Petersham taking on Hawkesbury in a 1st Grade limited overs match at Benson’s Lane, Richmond. The side won by 58 runs bowling out the Hawks for 168 in reply to its 9-226 off 50 overs. The Hawks’ bowling subdued the visitors’ batting to some extent, with top-score coming from number 7 bat Angus McTaggart, making 55 off 66 balls while hitting 6 fours. Earlier, skipper Riley Ayre had set the scene with a solid 50 off 87 balls with just 2 boundaries. Alex Ross, in his second Belvidere Cup match, made a valuable 41 off 56 balls. Former Australian left-arm spinner, Steve O’Keeffe ensured runs were hard to come by, taking 4-34 off 10 overs.

Western Suburbs 5th Grade hosted Fairfield Liverpool at Punchbowl Oval in Round 3 of the 2023-24 NSW Premier Cricket season.
Western Suburbs won the toss and without hesitation batted first, however found themselves in some trouble being 2/39 after 10 overs with wickets to Talha Yaseen and Ryan Rajesh putting Fairfield Liverpool on the front foot.
A superb 82 run partnership between club debutant Kit Keey and Jack Clark got Wests back in it before Clark was dismissed by Alexander Gomez for 38. Keey fell quickly after for 60. Will Zakostelsky continued his run of super form adding 38 with the middle to lower order contributing to get Wests to 8/219 at the completion of their 50 overs. Fairfield skipper Gomez was the pick of the bowlers with 3/34.

Western Suburbs won the toss and batted and found themselves in early trouble at 2 for 24 off the first 12 overs.
Fairfield Liverpool opening bowler Will McNamara figures in his first spell of 4 overs was 0 for 4 including 3 maidens.
A 43-run 3rd wicket partnership between Zain Shamsi and Josh Low McMahon was broken when Jai Long had Shamsi stumped for 18 and the score was 3 for 67.
Josh Low McMahon top scored for Western Suburbs with 50 off 62 balls including 4 fours and a six. He was ably supported by an excellent innings from Will O’Donell scoring 46 off 46 balls including 5 fours.

Australian Schoolboys Cricket team tour to West Indies 1969-70
The first match of the tour commenced on 18 December 1969 and the Australians went through the tour undefeated winning 7 of the 11 games played
The games were played against Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados, St Kitts Under 19s and also Under 20s teams.
Players from the West Indies Islands included Vanburn Holder, Brendan Julien, Collis King, David Murray, Inshan Ali, Andy Weekes (son of Sir Everton Weekes), Sheldon Gomes (brother of Larry Gomes) and perhaps a few others whose sons have gone on to play for the West Indies.
Paul Stephenson played for Manly in Sydney Grade Cricket from 1968 to 1981 and is a renowned historian, shared how lifelong friendships were forged on the tour and the teams 45 year anniversary catch up during the 3rd Test between Australia and West Indies at the SCG in January 2016.
“14 of the 16 players were able to make the celebrations. For the reunion I was able to collect a number of photos we didn’t really know existed plus the scorecards and presented each player with a 25 page booklet as a memento for the tour.” – Paul Stephenson

I played at school level, college level, university level, and also playing for a local club. My strongest area is batting.
Who has been your favourite Pakistan captain and if you could add a few words to why?
Babar Azam because he is running the team at level best. He is boosting up the morale of team. He is playing with responsibility. He is even against the political lobby in the team and under his captaincy everyone is playing as single unit.

Dean Morrison started his cricket journey with Toombul District Cricket Club asa junior in the Under 10s and made his way into grade cricket in 6th grade.
During the 1996/97 season Dean made his first grade debut to become Toombul DCC first grade player number 515.
At the age of 24 Dean moved to the UK to play some cricket and has since also enjoyed a successful career in finance and accounting. Recently he launched an exciting new business venture called “LassWho”.
Dean also represented the Jersey national cricket team in numerous International Cricket Council tournaments, as well as for the Australian Indigenous XI in 2003.
