Belmont District Cricket Club - Presidents Report 1984/85

The presentation of this Report to you, the members of Belmont District Cricket Club, traditionally brings to a close one "Cricket Year" and signifies the beginning of another. The season just past saw our club field teams in all Five Senior Grades and Under 17's and Under 23's, as well as Junior C & S sides in all age groups.

Honours came our way in the winning of the First Grade Premiership after a few years in the doldrums. My congratulations to the team and to Chris Williams in his first year of coaching in winning the pennant.

In the 2005/06 season, the Manly Warringah Waratahs staged our 2nd ever day-night match. It came after the success of the previous years match against North Sydney.

What a night it was. With 3,000 people in attendance at Manly Oval, Manly were able to get over the top of Parramatta with ease.

Manly 2-136 (Merchant 73, Atkinson 35) defeated Parramatta 135 (Sullivan 6-31, Todd 2-16).

We love the old articles from the Manly Daily, our local rag that was able to provide our story to the Northern Beach public for over 100 years.

We managed to dig this one up from 2003-04 about a 198-run partnership between Scott Patterson and Jack Ritchie in the U15 Weblin shield competition.

The Parramatta District Cricket Club has a highly unique tradition regarding the stability of its 1st Grade Scorers that few if any other Cricket Clubs across the globe could match. Incredibly since 1918 only three people have undertaken the important role of permanent Scorer for the club’s 1st Grade team up to 2020. - Ernie Gould, Wesley Gould and Christine Bennison. What an unmatchable record over a time span of 102 years these three individuals have indeed proved to be ‘Pen Pushers Extraordinaire’, only occasionally missing Parramatta or Central Cumberland 1st grade matches through personal illness or because they were engaged in scoring a first-class or international match, year in year out they proudly took their places in the ‘Scorer’s Chair’.

Please find the following citation in nominating Colin Jefferies for Life Membership to be acknowledged at the upcoming SCC AGM on 12 September 2024.

Col was recruited to the Tigers by the legendary Australian Cricket administrator, Mr Fred Bennett in 1991, when Col was then the secretary of the inner west junior community cricket association. Fred, certainly a man difficult to reject, installed Col as Balmain Cricket Club secretary in 1992, a position he held through to 1997 before he turned his hand to the club history and picking up the historical work created by Cliff Winning (Life Member).

Captained by Sam Mesite in his last playing year, this 2nd Grade side did remarkably well, finishing 4th on the table with 50 points from 2 Outright wins, 5 first innings wins, 4 losses and 4 draws.

Their Semi Final was the first for 2nd Grade since Ian Howell's die in 1975/76. Unfortunately, rain played a big part in the Semi Final, with 10 hours of play lost before we were able to get on the field. With the team needing to win to advance to the final, we declared at 6/98. However, Minor Premiers Parramatta overhauled our total with ease, finishing at 3/101.

Gemma Lockhart is a great club person and a promising young fast bowler who has worked her way through the grades to 1sts while representing NSW in indoor cricket.

What do you enjoy most about playing cricket?

I love being able to play the sport that I love with my friends and being able to share the passion of the game with others who feel the same way. I also love that cricket is both a team and individual sport.

Manly Warringah first-grade side in 2011-12 finished 5th over-all in Time Cruickshank's first season as First-Grade captain. They had 11 wins, 5 losses and 3 draws across their 19 regular season matches.

Unfortunately, we went down to Sydney University in the Quarter Final, but it was a successful season after a number of senior departures from the season before

Cameron Merchant had a magic summer, hitting 727 runs at an average of 51.9

On November 11, 2018 we will remember the important people.

November 11, 2018 is the commemoration of 100 years since the end of World War I.

The Gordon cricket club had 52 members who went to the First World War and seven of them didn’t return and more than 30 didn’t play cricket again due to either physical or phycological reasons. One of those seven was a young Gordon Vets player who was about to start a new season when the call was made to enlist and fight for their country and enjoy the adventure of a lifetime.

The young Vet’s player’s name was Alan Bruce who lived in Balfour Road, Lindfield and played for the Colts before the outbreak of war. The family originally came from Cassilis near Merriwa in NSW. His father David worked for the Department of Lands.

Alan was a civil servant and was engaged to be married when he enlisted on the 24th August, 1914 only a few weeks after the declaration of war and after initial training in Alexandria and other parts of the middle east, landed on the shores of Gallipoli on 25th April 1915 in the first wave of ships with his fellow 1st Battalion diggers scrambling their way onto the beach at Gallipoli as their fellow soldiers fell around them.

Excitement ran high among Manly cricket followers when, in September 1923, it was learnt that the great test all-rounder Jack Gregory would be joining the Club. Young members may not know much about Gregory, but it should suffice to say that he stood 6 feet 4 inches tall, was probably the fastest bowler in the world at the time, batted left-handed in the Gary Gilmour fashion, and was an acrobatic slip fielder who rates as one of Australia's finest in this position.
