St George First Grade Player No.86 - Percy Ford

Percy Ford began his career with St George as a 13-year-old teenager in the season of 1928-29 in our Poidevin Gray Shield side where he continued to play in that side until 1934-35.

He showed a great amount of potential as an allrounder.

The morning grade sides at BWCUCC had an incredible successful season. The Premiers & Championship sides won the 2-Day & T20 titles & the Div 2 Lions lifted their first One Day title.

Callum Hill: My Greatest XI

Callum Hill has worn many hats over his nine-year senior cricket journey. Hailing from Te Awamutu in country Waikato and schooled at Christchurch Boys High School down in Canterbury. His career began with the Melville Cricket Club in Hamilton where he was a junior and his father, Fraser, played 150 games.

Callum notched up over 90 First Grade appearances won two Premierships and represented both Hamilton and Waikato Valley in the Hawke Cup.

At the recent 24th annual general meeting of Randwick Petersham Cricket Club, Michael Whitney AM, was elected President for a 25th term. This places him equal fourth on the list of long-serving presidents of NSW Premier Cricket clubs. Only Austen Hughes (Northern District) with 34 years; Aubrey Oxlade (Manly-Warringah) with 33 and Sydney Bull (Balmain) with 28, have served longer terms. On the 25 years list, Mike joins David Thomas (Manly-Warringah), Brian Freedman (Bankstown) and Bevan White (North Sydney).

Vale Nancy Lovitt - Cricket Mum Made of Heaven.

World Series Cricket at the Sydney Showground Moore Park was an absolute bonanza for a young cricket fan, although Nancy not initially convinced of this new regime. She soon changed.

Nancy had become a total cricket convert. Rod Marsh and Dennis Lillee, her early favourites.

Ultimately Nathan Lyon and Brad Haddin her new favourites. Fellow Country NSW people made good. “Gee Nathan is a good cricketer” often her words. She also had a soft spot for "Smithy" (Steve Smith).

Barry McDonald had the rare distinction of setting a club wicket-keeping record in his first full Grade Cricket season with Petersham-Marrickville and establishing another, 19 seasons later in his last. In 1954-55, the 18-year-old dismissed 30 4th Grade batsmen behind the stumps, catching 15 and completing an amazing 15 stumpings

A Tribute to the Late Bob Thomas - "Rusty" Penrith's 8th Life Member

Bob Thomas between the Waugh brothers, Steve and Mark.

Bob Rusty Thomas came to Penrith in 1959 as an employee of the Commonwealth Bank, his only full-time employer in his lifetime. As a young man, he was on the relieving Staff with the bank and had many of his appointments in the country. Penrith was his first permanent position in a specific Branch with the bank. Bob fell in love with Penrith and resided here for the rest of his life.

On Saturday August 3, 2024, Tom Pritchard, the last Rat of Tobruk died aged 102. Tom served in the 2/5th Australian Field Ambulance during the siege of Tobruk in 1941. Gordon cricketer Victor Taylor served in the 2/13th Battalion at the same time as Tom, however died in 1952 at the age of 33 still suffering from the effects of his time in the war.

My best Grade team - Craig Hughes

Thinking back and trying to formulate my best Sydney first grade team, I’m finding it quite difficult as I’ve played with so many outstanding cricketers.

Playing at three different clubs, Campbelltown, Parramatta and Mosman doesn’t help as player allegiance changes somewhat, which can tamper with my selection. So to combat that I have just selected the team I’d least like to bat or bowl against at the peak of their powers.

St George Cricketers - Educators on the pitch and behind the pickets

When one considers that some 485 players have appeared in first grade for the St George District Cricket Club since the 1921-22 season when the club entered the first-grade competition there have only been around thirty known players that were school teachers. That equates to 6.1 % in its history. Some players had cameo appearances in first grade whilst others a lengthier sojourn.

Gary Whitaker

In a Randwick Cricket Club career spanning 17 years between 1984 and 2001, Gary Whitaker has many fond memories. And although there were some spectacular moments during that period, there are two which stand out. One was his debut match for Randwick when he made an unconquered century and the other was when he met his wife Robyn, who came to Randwick to assist the club with some injury rehabilitation to a number of players. While he had met her previously when playing rugby, the relationship blossomed and as they say in the good books–the rest is history.

In 2022, Bernadette Robson joined the UTS North Sydney Bears, but she fell in love with cricket long before that…
Since joining the club, Bernadette (Bernie) has immeasurably contributed to the women’s side. Both on and off the field, she leads fiercely with a tough, yet kind approach that brings confidence to the whole team.

From being crowned Women’s 3rd Grade Player of the Year in her first season with the club to captaining the side, there is no doubt that Bernie performs on the field.

Penrith Cricket Club 2nd grade premiers 1998-1999. A title under the tutelage of Whologang

P for Penrith, P for Pride - P for Perseverance: pretty profound words those! Those words were, of course, to become part of the now famous Panther victory song, which in the end was to be bellowed out a total of 13 times, including after the qualifying semi-final, the semi-final and the final! Yes, P also stands for Premiership, which is what the Second Grade XI took back to the hallowed Howell Oval turf.

UTS North Sydney is delighted to welcome Simon Keen as Men’s Club Coach. Simon had an illustrious Grade career, scoring 5,709 runs predominantly for Bankstown (but with a few T20s for the Bears thrown in!) and taking 222 wickets, and played professional short-form cricket in NSW and New Zealand as well as representing Australia Under 19s. More recently, he has coached The Entrance, who have won the Central Coast First Grade competition for the last three seasons.

Penrith Cricket Club 1996/97 - 5th grade bring home the bacon

What a great victory for the Fifth Grade team, and what a great victory for the Club's youth policy. Coupled with the Green Shield triumph, the season's performance by the young cricketers in the club has been nothing short of outstanding. The aim of the Fifth Grade has always been to transition junior players into senior cricket and develop skills for later years. To ultimately win the final against a much more experienced team demonstrated clearly the rapid progress that the team made.
