Adam Turrell was a Wenty Waratahs junior and began his career with Parramatta as a wicket-keeper / batsman in A.W. Green Shield team of 2003/04 – he is the son of club icon Allen Turrell – and entered the NSW Premier Cricket ranks via 5th grade in season 2005/06.

In that first season (2005/06) Adam impressed as a consistent performer with the bat, producing a solid 340 runs @ 26.15 (H.S. – 72) and behind the sticks he snapped up 14 catches and 4 stumpings.

Marshall Rosen Reflects on Chatswood Oval

Marshall Rosen – former NSW batsman with 7028 runs for the club in all grades at an average of 34.62, including 14 centuries. At the bowing crease his 180 wickets at 19.30 gave him all-round status which was further acknowledged when one considers he kept in the absence of Brian Taber, effecting 92 dismissals, 59 catches and 33 stumpings in 18 seasons at the club. A Life Member who gave much on and off the field for his club, joining the Committee and being a delegate to Cricket NSW for 21 years

Hazlewood Leads The Way

As Josh Hazlewood prepares for another Ashes series it’s appropriate to highlight the amazing record he has built since joining St George for the 2009/10 season. The strongly built, athletic fast bowler has established himself as one of the world’s leading exponents of his craft.

Now having played 76 Tests, capturing 295 wickets, as well as over 150 one day and T20 internationals, Hazlewood easily holds the record as St George’s most capped, Australian representative.

Trevor Chappell Reflects on Playing at Chatswood Oval

Trevor Chappell played with the Gordon DCC from the 1980-81 season until the end of the 1984-85 season. He scored 1095 runs in First Grade during that time at 35.52 and took 32 wickets at 23.91. His fielding was outstanding. It was whilst he was at the club that he was selected for New South Wales and Australia. Following his retirement, he returned to the club and coached both the women’s and men’s team giving much from his playing and coaching days.

A family affair for the Bears

The Bears’ Women’s Second Grade Round 4 win over St George-Sutherland was a family affair, with two mother-daughter pairs on the field, two dads coaching and one managing the team!

The match was a tense affair, with the Bears chasing down 169 7 wickets down in the final over, thanks to an unbroken partnership of 36 between the two mums, Bernadette Robson (46) and Anu Raj (16) on Second Grade debut).

The UTS North Sydney Bears took on Western Suburbs in Round 5 of the 2025/26 First Grade competition, with the Wests' line-up featuring Harjas Singh, one of the hottest names in Premier Cricket after his one-day triple century earlier in the season.

First Penrith Team of the Decade (1973-1983)

John Benaud, who became an Australian selector (1988-93) and later for NSW (1997-2002), thinks this combination is sure to get the tongues wagging in ‘Half-A-Bar’! The first player chosen would be Geoff Davies, a leg-spinner of great talent. There’s never been a great Australian cricket team that hasn’t had a great leg-spinner—fact or myth?

Next, we need a wicket-keeper to handle the wily Davies, and there’s only two in the frame, Greg Gavin and Les Andrews

Gordon Versus Sir Donald Bradman

Don Bradman seemed to have a liking for playing against Gordon. Here is a short profile of his games both at Chatswood and Hurstville.

Gordon’s first encounter with Don Bradman was against St George at Hurstville Oval in 1926-27. After Gordon had posted a moderate total of 211, Bert Watson top-scoring with 73, St George recovered from 7 wickets down for not much over 100 to score 219 and win by 8 runs. Bradman who was 18 years-old in his first season in Sydney, was bowled for 11 by another 18 year-old, Gordon leg-spinner Norval Campbell. Norval who took 6-94, was selected in the NSW team for two games later in the season.

Ken Hall - Penrith Cricket Club

The way some players walk – Ron ‘One Short’ Halse and Bob ‘The Greyhound’ Clarence – seems to attract the mischievous attention of teammates and inspires nicknames. Ken Hall’s was ‘Emu’, but it could just as easily have been ‘Cammo’ after the Cammack Award for Outstanding All-rounder, which he won continuously from 1977/78 until 1982/83.

Yusof Brown – A Bona Fide Loyal Clubman

Yusof Brown is somewhat of an ‘unsung hero’, a bona fide loyal clubman who captained the Parramatta 4th grade team, that contained some of the club’s most promising youngsters, to the NSW Premier Cricket’s 4th grade Grand Final in successive seasons 2021/22 and 2022/23), and to the Semi-Final in 2024/25. His calm and encouraging leadership have greatly aided the grade cricket education of his young charges and the Parramatta club will reap future benefits from Yusof’s efforts.

200 and counting for local junior Matt Hay

Stringing together hundreds of games of top-level grassroots sport is becoming increasingly rarer than it once was.

On Saturday, November 1, BWCUCC captain Matt Hay joins a fairly elite collection of players to play 200 premier games for the club. He becomes the second local junior to achieve the feat, following in the footsteps of club legend Mark Hastings.

Len Leabeater was a true Parramatta product – born on 10th July 1906 at Parramatta, educated at Parramatta High School, he died on 1st June 1996 at Port Macquarie. He gave away cricket at the early age of 29 years to focus on his Accountancy career.

A brilliant schoolboy cricketer and soccer player (NSW rep.), he later became a regular 1st grade Soccer player with the famous Granville Magpies team. He commenced playing for Central Cumberland in 3rd grade in 1921/22 and showed great promise as 16-year-old opening batsman. Len made his 1st grade debut in 1922/23 and played a handful of games in that grade in the 1925/26 season with moderate success, finally he cemented a permanent place in 1926/27 and continued to produce a range of great exploits until his premature retirement in 1934/35. In all grades for Cumberland Len scored 4,432 runs @ 33.07 – 1st grade 3,824 @ 35.40.

Greg Davidson was one of the Parramatta District Cricket Club’s memorial characters – a mountain of a man standing 6ft 10inches in the old imperial measurements, armed with an amiable manner and a laconic sense of humour all topped off with a wonderful baritone’s speaking voice. It was also ironic that such a large man should trundle down gentle off-spinners and bat in a conservative fashion instead of hurling down thunderbolts from a great height and smiting massive sixes. Answering to the nicknames of ‘Davo’ or ‘Longy’, the former Greystanes Cricket Club junior and Merrylands Oval grounds man left behind a legacy of a very rewarding career and plenty of great tales when he retired from playing in 2007/08 to try his hand at Umpiring.

Matthew Halse on Ronnie and Scorch: An Enduring Legacy

The early 90s was to be the dawn of one of the Club’s most important, successful and enduring legacies. Although Ron Halse and Rodney “Scorch” Evans were already well known to each other, this was to be the beginning of a long partnership, both on and off the field, which continues to this day.

Ben Wright has arrived at BWCUCC from Bradford Premier League Club Farsley in the North of England, where he is the captain. Wright is a top order batsman who offers handy overs of medium pace. It is his first trip to New Zealand to play and he has already made an impression on the club.

Matt Lewis joined Burnside West Christchurch University CC in the over the winter from Old Boys Collegians. Matt sports a swimmer's build, bowls like the wind and hits it miles. These three facets have played a part in the 21-year-old's inclusion in the Canterbury 'A' setup, where the Christ's College old boy is chasing higher honours.

We sat down with Matt and asked how he was settling in to life on Avonhead Road.
