John Pearson played just two seasons, 13 years apart, with Petersham-Marrickville, yet he was one of the most influential members of the club in the 1980s and through to its merger with Randwick in 2001.

Born on 15 October 1947 at Leichhardt and educated at Ibrox Park Boys High (now Leichhardt High), John Charles Pearson played his early Grade Cricket with Balmain. Prior to the 1968-69 season, John’s brother-in-law, Jeff McQueen, had an offer to join Petersham-Marrickville and the young opening bat, who had played a handful of 2nd Grade matches with Balmain, decided to go with him. Starting in 3rd Grade, Pearson impressed with top-score of 78 in only his second game. It was a match against Northern District which ended in a rare tie with both sides scoring 254. However, after five matches and a tally of 161 runs and nine wickets, selectors ushered him into 2nds where he completed the season.

It was an anxious wait for the 14 year old outside the family home in Kingsford as the Randwick official drove up to collect him for his first Sydney Grade Cricket match. With two rounds to go of the 1982-83 season, young Michael Chee Quee had been invited to join Randwick’s 5th Grade side. The official was club stalwart, Phil Tresidder, who handed Michael a borrowed pair of spiked cricket boots and the pair were off to Snape Park. Although he made only a handful of runs that day, it prompted skipper Gordon Owen to comment in his annual report that “in 14 year old right-hand batsman Michael Chee Quee, who played the last couple of games, I see a star of the future”. Prophetic words as that was the beginning of the much celebrated Chee Quee family association with Randwick Cricket and later Randwick Petersham, which continues to the present day.

Just over a year ago, I published the piece below on the ongoing importance of dynamic movement for peak batting performance.

My purpose was to provide a counterpoint to a disturbing trend over recent years towards batting coaches focusing on stillness and stability at the expense of dynamic movement.

My concern, in particular, was for young batters between the ages of 8-16. It’s vitally important that youngsters learn full-body, fluid, dynamic movement when batting. There is plenty of time to stabilise and refine later. But if you miss the opportunity, for example, to become a dynamic ‘skip-stepper’ and ‘spring-backer’ against spin bowling during that period, it is very, very difficult to acquire the skill as an adult.

February 16th, 1992 was the date and Manly Oval was the scene, for the World Cup warm up match between the touring Sri Lankans and an elite Manly President's XI. After many months of negotiations between our Club, the Australian Cricket Board and the Sri Lankan Cricket Board, the all clear was given only three weeks before the scheduled match date. Sri Lankan born businessman, Dilip Kumar from Peninsula Holden instigated initial talks with the Sri Lankan Board and the Club thanks him for his assistance in staging the match. Dilip's company, Peninsula Holden, was also the match day sponsor, with contributions also from The Communications Depot, Air Lanka and A Taste of India.

Vale John O’Reilly

It is with deep sadness that we record the passing of John O’Reilly, 1st Grade player no. 186.

John was an outstanding all rounder representing the Club from 1957/58 to 1965/66.

In those nine seasons he captured 304 wickets and with Keith Francis was the mainstay of the attack. John also represented NSW on 7 occasions in a career that was interrupted by a work transfer to Canberra.

John attended the Centenary of 1st Grade Dinner in 2022 and appreciated the opportunity to catch up with his former teammates Warren Saunders and Brian Booth. It was Warren who introduced John to his future wife, Patricia, who was Warren’s cousin. John’s son Peter also played with the Club and is 1st Grade player no. 275.

As can be seen from the attached article from CricConnect John had an interesting and very successful life both on and off the field and we extend our sympathies to his family.

John will be laid to rest in a private ceremony next week.

In cricket, the ability to perform under pressure is paramount. Whether you're a budding youth player or an experienced professional, the link between physical readiness and mental ability is undeniable. The Neuro Batting Program recognises that to achieve peak performance, every link in the chain must be strong. While vision, cognitive, and mental skills are crucial, the physical attributes from the shoulders to the toes play an equally vital role.

By focusing on holistic development, the program ensures that no part of the batter's performance is left to chance, preparing them to handle pressure and excel in every game. Remember, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and the Neuro Batting Program ensures that every link is strengthened for success.

For the Dozen or so who witnessed it late on a Saturday afternoon in December 2019, I am sure no one will ever forget the moment that they witness a new leg-spinning sensation.

With Everton’s B Grade hopes of an outright victory slipping away in their game against Coorparoo in Queensland Sub Districts Cricket, the overs running out, and the clouds starting to build. It was desperation stakes for the stand-in skipper Mills Jr.

He surveyed the outfield looking for that inspired bowling choice, the one that would get the boys back into the game and hopefully victory.

Maybe Jackson Mcarthur can land a few leggies. Jackson - next over from the clubhouse end.
