Kudos to South Australian cricket coach Ryan Harris, who I understand is big on the South Australian players playing as much Premier Cricket for their South Australian Premier Cricket Clubs as possible.

NSW played South Australia in last week’s Sheffield Shield game at Cricket Central in Sydney from Tuesday, 8 October, to Friday, 11 October 2024.

On Sunday, 13 October 2024, South Australia’s opening batter Connor McInerney scored 52 to help his Glenelg team to a 9 wicket victory over Southern District.

David Drew was 46 not out off 141 balls in South Australia’s 2nd innings to help his team hold on to a draw against NSW on Friday. On Sunday, Daniel skippered his first grade team, the West Torrens, to a terrific win as they chased down Sturt’s 8 for 335 off 50 overs to score 3 for 336 off 49.2.

Daniel Drew scored 143, not out off 139 balls. A great captain’s innings.

The Sheffield Shield game finished on Friday in Sydney, and both McInerney and Drew travelled home and steered their premier clubs to victory on Sunday.

Well done, Conor and David, and big vote of support to Ryan Harris.

It is important to note there wasn’t any Premier Cricket scheduled to be played in Qld, Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia on the Sunday after the three Sheffield Shield games finished on Friday. Also 7 Premier Cricket Clubs in South Australia had the bye in Round 2 of their one day competition.

On 2nd November 2024, Gordon Cricket and Rugby clubs, in conjunction with Willoughby City Council, will celebrate the centenary of the opening of Trumper Pavilion back in September 1924.

Victor Trumper is known as the most stylish and versatile batsman of the Golden Age of cricket, capable of playing match-winning innings on wet wickets his contemporaries found unplayable.

Chatswood Oval has been the home of Gordon District Cricket Club since its formation in 1905. Gordon Rugby Club was formed in 1936 and has played at Chatswood Oval from that time. Both clubs have Women’s divisions and Juniors.

My first organized cricket came at Muswellbrook Cricket Club where I played in the u10s as an 8 year old. The next year I then moved to the Blue Mountains where I played for Wentworth Falls Cricket Club. I started my representative cricket out west as I played for Blue Mountains Cricket Association and then Mitchell Cricket Council. I then played for Central West in the NSW Youth Championship before moving to Penrith in u15s to play representative cricket for them as I finished my junior cricket at Springwood Cricket Club. I then transitioned to grade cricket as I enter my 3rd year at Penrith Cricket Club with successful Metro cup seasons as I find myself in 5th grade now.

It’s AFL draft season, and the "father-son rule" has been getting a bit of attention. This rule, introduced in 1954, gives AFL clubs priority access to the sons of former players, helping to maintain the rich tradition of fathers and sons in the game.

Cricket, of course, doesn’t have a similar rule. But when I read that young Will Adlam had just made his first-grade debut for Mosman, it got me thinking about how many current NSW Premier Cricket first grade players have followed in their father’s footsteps.

With the father-son theme in mind, I thought it’d be interesting to put together a hypothetical NSW Premier Cricket Father and Son first grade team. Here’s my squad of 12.

Sam Konstas has completed a remarkable double in the current Sheffield Shield match against South Australia at Cricket Central. After recording his maiden first class century in the first innings with 152 (241 balls, 13 fours & 4 sixes), he scored his second century for the match in the second innings. In scoring 105 (225 balls, 7 fours & 1 six) at the age of 19 years 8 days, he became the youngest Australian player since Ricky Ponting to score a century in each innings of a Sheffield Shield match. Ponting did it at the age of 18 years 85 days in 1992-93. The only other player younger than Sam to score a century in each innings of a Sheffield Shield match was Archie Jackson, aged 18 years 124 days, in 1927-28. One other Australian player has scored a century in each innings of any first class match – Arthur Morris at the age of 18 years 344 days in his first class debut in 1940-41.

Sam has now scored 22 centuries in Sheffield Shield, Australian & NSW Under 19 matches and Premier Cricket. This includes centuries in 1st to 5th Grades, 1st Grade Limited Overs, Poidevin-Gray Shield & AW Green Shield – believed to be the only player to have achieved this feat.

Ben Gorham has had a lifelong association with Western Suburbs District Club.

For as long has he can remember Pratten Park was like a 2nd home to Ben. He’s the son of the Mal ‘Pencil’ Gorham who was the scorer for Western Suburbs First Grade team for over 30 years and a Life Member of the Club so he spent many days watching the first grade team play.

Ben has a healthy respect for the players he grew up watching and he’s a Magpie through and through.

The most influential man in the NSW Cricket Association between the two World Wars was Sydney Smith. By the time he turned 40 in 1920 he had held every senior post in the Association except the role of President which he was later to hold for 30 years.

He joined the Petersham club in 1901-02 and immediately assumed the role of Hon Secretary, holding the position for 15 years. When Smith joined it was a 2nd Grade club not being admitted to 1st Grade until 1907-08. It seems that such elevation was achieved largely through the efforts of the energetic and enterprising young Syd.

In April 1905, the NSW Cricket Association promoted the club to the first-grade competition. However, in doing so it was decided that Manly Cricket Club, as it was called at the time, would be combined with Mosman and took a new name - the Middle Harbour Cricket Club. The Association decided, however, that the Club's boundaries would remain within the Municipality of Manly, and that the territory within the adjoining Municipality of Mosman would be neutral territory.

The decision was hotly protested for some years by the Club's committee who felt strongly that as the district was part of the Electorate of Middle Harbour, it should have been included in the Club's boundaries, and that players resident in Mosman should be compelled to play with the new Club.

Oscar Dance is a young, hard-working leg-spin bowler for Western Suburbs District Cricket Club, known for the high level of effort he puts into his bowling at training.
