Western Suburbs can lay claim to 33 Test Internationals passing through the gates of Pratten Park and playing for the Magpies…

20 of these International Players represented Australia while active as a Western Suburbs Player and, remarkably, two Angus Fraser and Monty Panesar were selected for England while in the Wests ranks.

Mitchell STARC, who debuted in Wests First Grade in 2007, continues to spearhead the Australian attack.

However, it all started in March of 1877, in the First Test match in Melbourne, when Tom GARRETT debuted at age 18 years and 232 days…which still makes him the youngest representative to play for Australia against England. Tom was educated at Newington College while the School was still at ‘Newington House’, in the Sydney suburb of Silverwater.

At the completion of the 2024-25 Premier Cricket season around Australia which premier cricket club across the states playing first class cricket will be able to claim to be the best first grade premiership winning cricket club in the first 25 seasons of this century.

A quick review around the states since the 2000-01 season and there’s been 138 premier premierships won by 59 premier cricket clubs across NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia, and Queensland.

The premier premierships are for the two- or four-day grand finals and don’t include one day premierships.

There are 88 premier cricket clubs around Australia, so it means 29 clubs have not won a first-grade premier premiership since 2000-01 or longer.

My son is 14 and wants to be a young fast bowler. He seems to bowl quicker than most his age but has difficulty with his run up.
I don’t know much about cricket, but he accelerates quickly at the start of his run up, and I think he starts to lose momentum as he gets into his bowling action.
Can I ask for some advice on how long his run up should be and where in his run up should he be accelerating?

Bruce Whitehouse has made an immense contribution to cricket on and off the field as a player, administrator and umpire.

Bruce was awarded Life Membership of George River Cricket Club in 1993/94, he’s a former President of the club and has been inducted as a Blue Bag legend

Who played the best innings you’ve seen firsthand playing with or against?

I saw a fantastic dig umpiring by Josh Clarke playing for Wests against Sutherland in 2019/20 where he scored a chanceless 176.

In 4th grade last year in the semi final Sydney Univeristy managed 4 for 315 and declared. Day 2 saw Sutherland 6 for 31 before lunch needing to hang on for a draw to go through to the final. Skipper James Hawksworth batted out the day remaining unbeaten on 110 with Sutherland ending on 9 for 231 and booking a spot in the final. An amazing dig!!

The Cricket Victoria Foundation today launches its new Pick a Picket program – a major new fundraising campaign giving Victorian cricket fans a chance to have their names captured at the home of Victorian cricket.
To own their slice of history, fans will be able to purchase a picket number corresponding to a former Victorian, Australian, Melbourne Stars or Melbourne Renegades player.

A plaque will then be installed on the corresponding perimeter pickets at the CitiPower Centre. All funds raised support the important work of the Cricket Victoria Foundation.

Cricket Victoria Foundation Chair Paul Gardner AM said the pickets were a fantastic way to own a slice of history.

“Whether it’s for you, your business or family, we’ve got a fantastic opportunity to secure a place on the pickets alongside some of our best-known players,” Gardner said.

First ball – Slay!

St George-Sutherland Slayer, Rhiannon Dick, ripped through the Manly Warringah first-grade line-up in their match-up on Sunday, claiming figures of 7-8 from four overs. Yes, you read that correctly…7-8! Well bowled.

Second ball – Trademark Clarke provides Magpies spark!

Western Suburbs talisman Josh Clarke came in to bat with his side at 1-18, having been sent in by Randwick Petersham. Clarke, together with Liam Sparke 92 (209 balls) added 194 runs for the second wicket, with Clarke batting throughout the rest of the day, to be 142* (not out) at stumps. It was Clarke’s 23rd century. It took him to 9301 first-grade runs, past Australian sporting legend Victor Trumper (9244).
