The Queensland Bulls have named eight newly contracted players in their squad to prepare for the 2024-25 cricket season.

Included in the list are four members of the victorious Australia Under-19 team that claimed the ICC World Cup in South Africa earlier this year.

Pace bowler Callum Vidler, who took five wickets in his first class debut for Queensland in the last Marsh Sheffield Shield game of the season, and the Australian captain Hugh Weibgen are among the players who have signed full State contracts for the first time.

England’s Rob Key backs Kookaburra ball for full-time use in county cricket

“I think it’s been fantastic,” said Key. “You see what four-day cricket is meant to be. I’ve watched quite a bit this week and seen some bloody good cricket. I would use the Kookaburra all the time. English cricket would be much better off for it.”
But county cricket is meant to go four days. This week has shown it’s rewarding the right type of players. Cricket is about watching pace bowlers, spinners and really good batting. Four days is about the journey.”
“The pitches are slow this time of year but watching medium pacers is a waste of time,” said Key. “Teams need to find quicker bowlers or ones who will force a wicket. You can’t just keep running up bowling at 75mph. And in terms of those guys who are not express, you really work out who can bowl.

My son is 15 and loves cricket. During the off-season last year, he worked really hard on his batting.
He was opening the batting and really enjoyed it and wanted to get a lot better. But after two games and he scored 33 and 41 the coach said he batted too slow and for the rest of the season he was batting down the order and didn’t get many chances.
No, he says what’s the point of training this off season. It’s sad as he really does love batting and the game. What advice could anyone offer?

Burt Cockley played first class cricket for NSW and Western Australia. He played T20 Cricket for the Perth Scorchers in the BBL and for Kings XI Punjab in the IPL.

He played NSW Premier Cricket for Randwick Petersham

In first class cricket Burt took 44 wickets in 14 games at an average of 28.40 with best figures of 5 for 76.

As a fast bowler Burt had speed (over 140km) and muscle and he loved nothing more than the freedom of bowling as fact as he could. Unfortunately consistent injuries curtailed his career.

Despite the setbacks and frustrations Burt has found a new path and there are no limits.

The Cricket NSW Foundation, in a bid to provide better training to umpires across the state, provided a grant to the NSW Cricket Umpires and Scorers’ Association (NSWCUSA) in the 2023-24 season to enable greater access to cricket for aspiring umpires across regional NSW.

The grant allowed the NSWCUSA to subsidise the cost of attending and sitting the Laws of Cricket workshops across NSW to remove a financial barrier to getting more umpires officiating games of cricket in NSW.
