This award is presented to the senior player deemed to have contributed most to the performance of the club.

With 1sts winning the flag it's hard to go past what Kurtis brought to that team with his skill and experience. However for anyone who was lucky enough to witness his amazing century against Parramatta in the Semi Final it was his passion that stood out most and this definitely became a part of the dynamic of the teams wonderful success in 23-24.No doubt it flowed down the grades to the young up and comers.

All up in all 1st Grade fixtures and formats Kurtis scored 908 runs at 69.85

This photo has the accompanying description:

While I'm happy the description might be wrong (as far as I'm aware Calthorpe only lead one international tour and that was to the Caribbean in 1929-30; he only played a total of 4 Test matches), does anyone have more information about this 'Trumper' bat and the significance behind it?

We all have days that we never forget. For me, it was mostly team-related and I treasure being lucky enough to be part of a first-grade premiership in 1998/99 season with the Balmain, (now known as Sydney Cricket Club). A great group of tigers who played for each other.

There is one day that does stand out, personally. It was the day of the official opening of the new grandstand at our home ground, Drummoyne Oval. To celebrate the occasion Balmain put on a big lunch and many dignitaries from Cricket NSW were in attendance.

One the day Balmain were playing St George. One of the great clubs in grade cricket history and a long-standing rivalry. Saints were one of the strongest clubs in the 90s.

Stan Gilchrist has made a lifetime contribution to cricket especially across NSW and regional areas.

In 2015 Stan was awarded an OAM (Order of Australia Medal) and recognised by Country Cricket NSW with a Lifetime Coaching Award.

A leg spinner in his playing days Stan represented Northern NSW Emus before moving to Sydney and playing Grade cricket for Paddington, Randwick, Sutherland and University of New South Wales.

Stan played in Sutherland District Cricket Club inaugural first grade game on 25 September 1965 against St George. He is the proud owner of Sutherland DCC first grade player number 5.

After reading the interview one of the players in the game, Sutherland’s wicket keeper Shane Duff shared the scorebook of the game and we very much appreciate Shane's permission to share the scorebook.

Shane remembers the game fondly as he took his first dismissal in first grade.

A. Gilchrist stumped Duff bowled Chapman 1

The scorecard makes for fascinating reading.

The game was in November 1990 and it was Round 4 in the Sydney Grade Cricket competition between Sutherland DCC and Gordon CC at the leafy Killara Oval, Gordon’s home ground.

Firstly a piece of real cricketing history, the scorebook…remember the days.

Dandenong batter Brett Forsyth and Geelong all-rounder Stephanie Townsend have won the Jack Ryder Medal and Una Paisley Medal respectively at the Kookaburra Premier Cricket Awards held at the MCG last Friday.

Townsend’s win makes history for Geelong, as the first Una Paisley medallist for the club in Geelong’s inaugural season in the Women’s Premier XI competition.

Townsend won the Sue Woolcock Award as the best player in the Women’s Premier 2nd XI competition in the previous season

A League Cricket Club in the Cheshire League is looking for an overseas batter with first grade experience in Premier Cricket in Australia. It’s late notice, but their contract overseas player has had to withdraw.

The season in Cheshire starts in 2 weeks, so if anyone is interested, they need to be ready to travel and play.

The Cheshire club is willing to pay for return air fares, accommodation, and club kit, and if you score a lot of runs, you could earn an extra quid or two.

The Cheshire League is designated ECB Premier League and has a good standard of cricket. Cheshire is also a good place to live and well connected to the rest of the U.K.

This is a great opportunity for a young first-grade batter.

Not only is she playing and writing about women's cricket across the globe, but she's also dedicated to a cause close to her heart: fundraising for The LBW Trust. This incredible journey began in Hong Kong on April 1st, 2023 and since then, Jenny has visited and played cricket in 61 countries. (last update: April 5th, 2024)

But it's not just about cricket; Jenny is using her platform to highlight issues that matter. One such issue is education, and her partnership with CandleAid in Sri Lanka is a testament to this commitment

Given the recent passing of one of our club's great educators, Brian Booth, the importance of this scholarship to the players and members of the St George DCC grows even larger in significance.

This great initiative has been running since 2006-07 and we are extremely proud to announce that this season's recipient is none other than Tom Forrester, one of the most impressive young men within our playing fraternity....

...And how good to have 3rd Grade skipper and grandson of Brian, Nathan Anderson to present this great honour to Tom.

Tom will be undertaking a Bachelor or Nursing with a view to moving into Medicine in the future and the help this scholarship provides will allow Tom to hopefully reach his goals with a little less pressure.

Previous winners include the likes of Damian Bourke, Chris MacDougal, Simon Chu, Andrew Walsh, Peter Francis, Vasi MacMillan and Josh Moors most of whom followed the path, like Brian Booth, into the field of education.

"NSW Cricket and the Baby Blues, Rest In Peace” was the headline in the Australian newspaper December 1993 following a humiliating Sheffield Shield defeat in Perth in only two days. To make matters worse, the article was illustrated with individual tombstones of each player who participated in the match. Ouch!

If a team ever needed motivation, this was it!

NSW had to win the last seven Sheffield Shield games in a row to make the final. Almost an impossible task based on current form.

Before our next match at the SCG, a young fan gave Adam Gilchrist, our then number 5 batsmen a tiny figurine of Scooby Doo for good luck. When asked why Adam had a small dog on top of his locker he replied “Boys he is good luck. Everyone rub Scooby’s head before we take the field today.” That we did, and we won the match convincingly.

As the cricket world looks forward to another season (in the U.K) I want to pay tribute to the many millions of players who really make this the game we love so much - those being the regular weekend club cricketers. I was blessed to be part of a very special team way back in the previous century. This team came together when a couple of other clubs looked like folding which was a loss that a few of the founders of Orange City Cricket Club, (Orange NSW, Australia) wouldn't allow to happen.

Orange City Cricket Club (The Warriors) formed in 1968 and after a reasonably competitive season they went on to win the 1st Grade Premiership in 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1973. The team composed of 4 specialist batsmen (two lefties and 2 right handers, 2 wicket-keeper batsmen, 3 fast bowling all-rounders, complimented by left arm and right arm finger spinners.

It was a team formed of friendship and mutual respect, practising twice a week, turning up on Saturday for the game and many hours of bonding afterwards at the local hotel who sponsored them.
In the end, it wasn't just the winning that counted, the team turned us into better men who cared and played for each other.

We became friends for life. That's what cricket offers up.

I make this post in the hope that club cricket will continue to be there to give opportunities for players of all levels to make friends, play a great game and be in my position; being able to remember how good it all was!

Jared Sippel finished the 2023-24 season with 657 runs at an average of 41.06 with Western Suburbs in Queensland Premier Cricket. He scored one century and 4 half centuries.

A Queensland country boy at heart Jared represented Queensland Under 17s at the National Championships in 2016 and has previously played for Sunshine Coast Scorches.

The Shane Warne Academy at the St.Kilda Cricket Club in the 2023/2024 season was momentous as it was the first year that the club had girls' and women's teams, and the Under 18 men's team won the Inaugural Men's Under 18 competition against the Melbourne Cricket Club. A fierce rival and one we respect immensely. The Under 18 women's team was Runner Up in the Under 18 Female Future Tournament. The Under 15 Girls and Under 16 Boys demonstrated great potential and were competitive in all games. Another year under their belts... look out 2024/2025.
