Following the departure of Matthew Phelps in 2003, Manly experienced a period of instability at the top of the batting order that persisted for several seasons. In preparation for the 2005/06 campaign, the club moved to address this gap by recruiting accomplished top-order batsman Darren Wotherspoon from Norths.
A product of the Central Coast, Wotherspoon brought with him an impressive junior representative résumé, including selection in the Australian Cricket Academy. He subsequently established himself in Sydney Grade cricket and earned representation in the NSW Second XI.
