Darren Wotherspoon 2005/06 season
Manly Warringah District Cricket Club | June 18, 2026

Following the departure of Matthew Phelps in 2003, Manly experienced a period of instability at the top of the batting order that persisted for several seasons. In preparation for the 2005/06 campaign, the club moved to address this gap by recruiting accomplished top-order batsman Darren Wotherspoon from Norths.
A product of the Central Coast, Wotherspoon brought with him an impressive junior representative résumé, including selection in the Australian Cricket Academy. He subsequently established himself in Sydney Grade cricket and earned representation in the NSW Second XI. An additional connection helped facilitate his move to Manly: his mentor at Norths, Phil Marks, was not only a former Manly great but also the brother-in-law of then first-grade captain Shawn Bradstreet.
Affectionately known as “Spoons,” Wotherspoon quickly integrated into the Manly culture, forming a close bond with fellow top-order batsman Cameron Merchant while living together in Dee Why. The team made a strong start to the season, although Wotherspoon initially took time to find form. By the Christmas break, however, he had settled into his role, highlighted by a century against UNSW.
His momentum continued into the second half of the season. He produced a commanding 120 in the First Grade limited-overs semi-final against Gordon and followed it with a composed 78 in the two-day semi-final victory over Sutherland. Manly ultimately secured the limited-overs title and finished runners-up in the two-day competition, while also claiming the club championship.
Individually, Wotherspoon delivered an outstanding season, breaking Phelps’ First Grade run-scoring record with 976 runs. He also contributed significantly with the ball, claiming a valuable 19 wickets, underscoring his all-round impact on a highly successful campaign.
