In 2021, Warringah Cricket Club President Chris “Beachy” Melville invited Deb Kasmar for a coffee to discuss getting involved with the club. That conversation led to Deb joining the committee, a role she proudly continues today.
Her involvement began even earlier, when her son Noah played the occasional game for the club in 2019. What started as supporting her son gradually evolved into becoming a central figure in the club’s community life.
Deb plays a vital role behind the scenes.
She organises club events, helps coordinate the annual golf day, runs monthly presentation evenings at the clubhouse, and ensures players are recognised for their efforts throughout the season. On presentation nights, she arranges a sausage sizzle and dessert after training, creating an environment where players and families can connect.
She also organises the club’s annual awards evening, now hosting around 150 guests and growing each year.
Beyond cricket, Deb has helped strengthen the club’s connection to the broader community. Warringah supports two charities — One Meal and Women & Children First. Deb volunteers delivering Christmas hampers and has organised education evenings where representatives speak to players about domestic violence and respect.
One of her most memorable moments came during the 2023 4th Grade Grand Final.
Chasing 212, Warringah were struggling at 5/33. The odds looked long.
That day carried deeper meaning. A close friend battling cancer arrived to watch. Deb remembers the momentum shifting after she arrived, as the runs began to flow. Warringah won by one wicket in dramatic fashion. It was the last time she saw her friend.
Another player in the side had recently lost his grandfather and was among the final batters standing when victory was secured.
“It was such a special day in more ways than one,” she recalls.
When asked about her favourite player, Deb doesn’t hesitate.
Her son Noah.
She speaks proudly of the hard work he put in to become a permanent member of the club. Transitioning from being known primarily as a bowler to becoming a recognised batter at Warringah, Noah has since scored multiple centuries, is now one of the club captains and opens the batting in 2nd Grade.
But for Deb, Warringah Cricket Club is about more than results.
“It’s like an extended family,” she says.
The young men of the club greet her warmly, thank her after events, and treat her with respect. Friendships formed over years and some dating back to when the boys were five years old, remain strong today.
“The success and reputation of the club is a bonus. I’m very proud to play a small role and hopefully will be for a long time to come.”
