A Tribute to Steve McClue - Western Suburbs District Cricket Club

Western Suburbs District Cricket Club Sydney | January 09, 2026

Some people don’t just belong to a cricket club; they become part of its fabric.

Steve McClue is one of those people.

Steve’s connection with Western Suburbs District Cricket Club began 57 years ago, when he was just 12 years old. While most kids his age were dreaming of batting at Pratten Park, Steve was already serving the club taking on scoreboard duties at the home ground and learning the rhythms of the game from a different, but no less vital, vantage point.

Alongside him was his cousin, the legendary Western Suburbs scorer Mal Gorham. When Mal was away on representative duties for NSW or Australia, Steve stepped in as scorer. It was the beginning of a lifetime of service, commitment, and quiet excellence.

Following Mal’s passing in 2004, Steve formally took over the scorer’s role, a responsibility he has carried with pride ever since.

By the Numbers (and They’re Extraordinary)

  • 57 years of continuous involvement with Western Suburbs
  • 927 matches scored to date
  • Games across First Grade, Poidevin-Gray Shield and Green Shield
  • Many years spent on manual scoreboards, often alongside the great Peter Bardsley

These numbers only tell part of the story. Anyone who has spent time around Pratten Park knows Steve’s presence goes far beyond the scorebook.

Words from the Club

Mike Swan – President, Western Suburbs District Cricket Club

“Steve McClue is an invaluable volunteer and life member of the Western Suburbs District Cricket Club. Steve’s contribution extends well beyond his own half century, with 57 years of support, encouragement, and dedication, he is one of the most well-regarded scorers across NSW Premier Cricket.

My relationship with Steve started back in my playing days when he took over scoring after the sad passing of Mal Gorham in 2004. Since then, Steve has been the First Grade, Poidevin-Gray and Green Shield scorer, with over an incredible 920 games pencilled in his name.

An amazing and passionate Western Suburbs Magpie.”

James Psarakis – First Grade Captain

“People like Stevie are what make club cricket what it is. He’s been around the club and scoring First Grade for as long as I’ve been alive — and he’s irreplaceable.

Stevie quietly goes about his work, helping the boys with lollies, bars, Gatorade — everything in between. Often unnoticed, but when he’s away, everyone feels the difference.

He’s a true legend of the club. His knowledge, passion and love for Western Suburbs are unmatched.”

A True Magpie

Steve McClue represents the very best of community and Premier cricket — loyalty, humility, service, and love for the game. Week after week, season after season, he has turned up not for recognition, but because Western Suburbs is his club.

And Western Suburbs is richer for it.

Thank you, Steve — a true Magpie, a life member, and a legend of NSW Premier Cricket.
