Q: Do you recognise this ground from Sydney Grade Cricket and do you have a memorable moment you'd like to share from playing or watching a game at the ground?
A: Petersham oval. Yes very fond memories of the “toilet”. Many tough battles there including facing a very tough spell from the late David Capel who came around the wicket late in the day and bumped myself and burks………his direction was immaculate and pace deceptive. We were both very pleased to see that spell out.

Q: Our fastest bowler can be a little wayward with the new ball and I think better suited to bowling first change. The captain keeps giving him the new ball thinking he might bounce the openers out, but it rarely happens, and the opposition gets off to a flyer.
Our first change comes on and bowls line and length and gets wickets. Shouldn’t he open the bowling and let the quicker bowler bowl with less shine on the ball.?
A: I think you need to work and communicate with the fastest bowler, to tidy up his line and length. Work with him so he understands what’s expected of him and that he understands the plan.
If he can’t execute the plan, then replace him with the first change bowler. If he is wayward in his first two overs, replace him. The message will soon get through.
The best result is to have your quick bowling the right areas from the start, so it is worth persisting to get him right. Pace and the new ball are always a great combination for early wickets.

Q: Which cricket club in Australia has had the most number of Australian Test wicket keepers play grade cricket at their club?
A: Western Suburbs in Sydney had Steve Rixon and Greg Dyer as first grade keepers. Adam Gilchrist played in our Under 16 Green Shield team so if that's ok, we'll claim 3 Magpie Australian Test wicket keepers.

Q: I’m new to umpiring and have become quite fascinated about the psychology of the different guards’ batters choose when they come out to bat.
Batters ask for middle stump, leg stump, middle to leg, one leg, leg stump to off stump and other variations. Can I ask what you choose and the reason why?
A: I always asked for middle. I felt I could adjust slightly to off or leg depending on the bowling and the wicket. I guess it’s also what you get used to.
