question
Q: NSWCUSA - Annual Dinner and Awards Night

Alan Marshall (#14) and Arthur Watson (#15) were inducted into the NSWCUSA Hall of Fame. This was beautifully put together by the Association, appreciated by members of the late Alan Marshall’s family and by Arthur Watson and his wife, Ann, who were in attendance. Arthur spoke superbly about his work with Alan over many years in honouring him. Alan and Arthur have been such outstanding ambassadors and contributors on and off the field. We owe so much to those who dug the well in the NSWCUSA, standing strongly on the shoulders of those who have gone before us. Alan and Arthur were deserving HoF inductees, they have done and achieved so much. Given their friendship, teamwork and respective contributions, it was fitting they were honoured on the same night.

Q: Marty Edgell took up umpiring after an invitation from his good friend Errol Cranney. Within 2 season Marty had progressed from 5th grade to make his first grade debut

A popular umpire amongst his peers and players Marty shares some of his most memorable moments during his time umpiring in NSW Premier Cricket

What was the attraction to become an umpire?

My son was about to start playing Cawsey Shield for Manly and the coach Dr John Barker gathered the parents together before the first game and said “we need 2 umpires for the season, any volunteers?” I thought at the time that would be a good way to show Luke I was interested in the sport he had chosen and be able to watch each game. Laws night was held at the Forrestville Soccer Club and the course was being run by David Brandon, Errol Cranney.

Geoff is a very proud Life Member of NSW Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association

Are there any lessons from your time in cricket that you take into work or life in general?

As a High School Principal for 15 years I took lessons into the game. Communication, individual differences in personality, importance of empathy, management skills, ability to let players have their say but know when to draw the line. Cricket is a just a microcosm of life. It does not build character but reveals it!!
