Ron Saggers could be regarded as Marrickville DCC greatest cricketer. An excellent batsman and wicket-keeper of exceptional skill he played for Australia, NSW and Marrickville with outstanding success.

While he was a classy batsman, it was his polish as a wicket-keeper with an amazing ability to effect stumping’s which was on regular display during his international playing career between 1939 and 1951. Sagger’s record shows that of his 221 first-class career dismissals, no less than an amazing 75…or 34%…were stumped.

Tim Cox started his cricket journey in Dubbo with the RSL Colts Cricket Club and with great delight the club has watched his career progress to from first grade cricket in Dubbo to first grade premier cricket in Sydney, NSW Country and to cricket in Newcastle.

At what age did you make your first grade debut in grade cricket and can you remember how you performed in debut?

In premier cricket in Sydney I was 20 and UNSW played Gordon. I batted number 7 and got 88 not out after a top order collapse on day one. That was my highest score in 1st Grade in Sydney. It was a great initiation to 1st grade spending time in the middle facing Matthew Nicholson. I think we went on to win the game.

Dylan Connell joined Gordon and made his first grade debut in 2000. In 11 seasons Dylan took 294 first grade wickets at an average of 24.74 with best bowling of 6 for 27. He took 5 wickets in an innings on 11 occasions

Who played the best innings you’ve seen firsthand playing with or against?

There is one match that comes to mind, we were playing Fairfield -Liverpool at Chatswood Oval. We won the toss and batted. Beau Casson scored 200 plus out of over 400 for Gordon. His innings was flawless.

On day two Fairfield had some early luck before Grant Lambert also went on to score 200 plus and get them home in the last few overs. Was an amazing match where both teams scored well over 400 with a double century in both innings.

John Di Bartolo – Tribute

With pleasure we are able to reflect on the wonderful playing career of Johnny Di Bartolo, Blacktown first grade player number 127.

In full flight Johnny struck fear into opposition teams across the competition and can best described as dominant, destructive and game changing. As an opening batsman Johnny set the tone early in each innings, grabbing the momentum and ascendency for his side, that more often than not proved decisive in the final result.

In the twilight years of Johnny’s first grade career, we were fortunate to have his leadership, experience, and guidance, developing the next generation of aspiring cricketers at the Blacktown Warriors

In the cricket season of 1973-74, Graham Errington indicated in no uncertain manner that he was a wicket-keeper out of the top drawer, by breaking a club record on debut in Randwick’s 1st Grade team. And to perform that feat and make that debut, he had a meteoric transition from 4th Grade to 1sts–all in a six month period and all before he was 21!

Graham John Errington was born at Sydney on 27 July 1953 and educated at Sydney Boys High where he played cricket in the GPS competition. In 1967-68, he played for Combined Associated Schools (CAS) in the A W Green Shield competition after the NSW Cricket Association had approved the entry of such a team. The couple of games he had in the side whetted his appetite, and the following season he joined the Balmain Green Shield team where he played the season. That led to him making his Grade Cricket debut in Balmain’s 1972-73 4th Grade.

Ask any Queensland cricket fan of a certain age and they will tell you that Carl Rackemann took the catch that ended the 1994/95 Sheffield Shield final. They may or may not recall that left arm spinner Paul Jackson bowled the ball that sealed Queensland's first ever Sheffield Shield and having known Jacko for 30 years think that may be the way he prefers it. Whilst comfortable out of the limelight, Jackson was always determined to contribute to his teams' successes on and off the field but it would be wrong to call him quiet as anyone who has had (or tried to have) a cricket conversation with him would attest.

Michael Blatherwick is the Managing Director of B3 Cricket.

Who are the two players you admired most in terms of skills and competitive spirit in the competitions you played?

Again, numerous but special mention to Neil Fenwick and Andre Adams. Fenner’s was a brilliant all rounder and should have played professional cricket in my opinion. Hard and fair summed him up.

Andre came to be our overseas pro at Kimberley in 2000 and 2001. He was a superb allrounder and played the game with a brilliant mentality. Cool as a cucumber but no ground given. He went onto play for New Zealand, Essex and became a legend at Nottinghamshire.
