A blast from the past- Jamie Heath's first 1st grade 5 wicket haul.

Belmont Cricket Club's teenage bowling sensation shone despite miserable conditions. Chasing Wallsend's 1st innings total of 151, Belmont were always going to be facing a mammoth task due to poor weather conditions and a rain-affected pitch. In what was described as an ordinary batting effort by many, Belmont could only muster a total of 9d-58. Belmont batsman Eric Tyrell posted a high score for the Belmont innings of 36 no in these conditions, proving to be the only shining light from the innings.

Cricket was played in the Nepean District as early as the 1870s when matches were organised between towns by mutual arrangement. But for the local cricket people, the biggest moment came in the 1891/1892 season when it was proposed that an English team, managed by Lord Sheffield and captains by the redoubtable cricket master Dr W G Grace , toured Australia and would play a match against a Nepean 13 on the 16th/17th February 1892. As might be imagined, much had to be done to bring off such a historic match. Thirty persons attended a meeting chaired by Mayor Judge in the Council Chambers where Alderman TR Smith happily announced that the Englishmen has closed with his offer of one hundred pound for a two day match.

Newcastle took on the Western region in the NSW Country Cup final in 1994/95 season and had a heavy influence of Belmont cricketers in the side.

From The Vault: Bears claim the David Sherwood Cup - 5th grade premiers

In March 2020, Patrick Lindsay reflected on an unusual Premiership for the Bears Fifth Grade side.

After 15 Rounds of the regular season, Fifth Grade have been crowned Champions and holders of the David Sherwood Cup for the first time since 1974-75. Obviously there is a large degree of hollowness felt as a result of this outcome, which is of course due to the cancellation of the finals due to the COVID-19 virus.

When left-arm swing bowler Jake Wilson had the last Hawkesbury batsman caught in round eight of the 2012-13 season to give him innings figures of 5-11, he marched into the Randwick Petersham record books. Not only did that wicket give him 100 in 1st Grade but he achieved the milestone quicker than the two bowlers who had reached the century mark before him. While both Andrew Harrison and James Byrne brought up their “bowlers ton” in four and a half seasons, Jake did it in just two and a half. His 100 wickets came up in his 55th game for Randwick Petersham from a total of 542.4 overs.

Jake Keiran Wilson was born at Darlinghurst on 6 December 1981. A product of Port Hacking High School, Jake developed his game with St George, rising to 2nd Grade where he had a number of impressive performances in taking 147 wickets

Charlie Stobo made his first-class debut for NSW at just 21. After a few seasons with limited chances, he took a leap and moved to WA in search of opportunity. It paid off—he broke into a dominant Western Australia side at a time when they won three straight Sheffield Shields and multiple one-day titles. In 2024, he also had a stint with Kent in England.

After 22 first class games Charlie has 61 wickets at an average of 28.

Now back in Sydney with a NSW contract, Charlie returns with plenty of experience and a winning mindset. Cricket’s in the blood too—his dad, Richard, played 6 first class games for NSW in the late 80s and early 90s and took 396 first grade wickets in what’s now known as NSW Premier Cricket

1. Ray Gonella and Jon Jobson put together 209 against Petersham to establish a new club record partnership for the third wicket. (1981-82). Jobson was also involved in a 204 run partnership with Greg Matchett against Waverley earlier in the season.

At the club’s Presentation Night on 12 April, UTS North Sydney named their First XI for 2024-25, including the Bevyn White Cricketer of the Year.

The First XI is made up of the top 11 performers of the season, based on points accrued for runs, wickets and fielding dismissals, on a per match basis.

I have selected my best Gordon team from players I played with in the 1990s. The team has been selected primarily on performances for Gordon. We had some fantastic players in that era and won 2 premierships. Picking the team has brought back some great memories.

1. Greg Hayne. Imposing opening bat whose record in Sydney premier cricket is phenomenal. Also a superb pair of hands.

Penrith Cricket Club 2022-23 Women's First Grade Premiers

After a heart-breaking loss in the 2021-22 Grand Final, Penrith’s Lady Cats were determined to get the job done in 2022-23. Strong performances throughout the regular season saw them finish in second position on the ladder and, after knocking off Parramatta in the semi-final, they went into the Grand Final against Northern District as favourites.

For the first time, the Grand Final was held at Cricket Central, Cricket NSW’s new purpose-built facility.

Riley Ayre is Randwick Petersham’s Player of the 2024-25 Season. It is the third time he has won the award while he has been runner-up, three times as well. He is one of the best all-rounders to have played with Randwick Petersham and after the season he has just had, he is quickly carving a reputation, through weight of performances, to be one of the top 80 or so, to have played Sydney 1st Grade cricket.

St George DCC First Grade Player No.78 - Ray Little

Raymond Cecil James Little was born in Uralla (between Armidale and Tamworth) on the 7th of October 1914.

It is stated that he moved from Newcastle to St George where he made his first debut in the season of 1933/34. No doubt he would have gained the attention of the cricketing folk in Sydney when in February of 1932 he scored a century against a touring Marylebone Cricket Club (The MCC) team featuring many English greats such as Jack Hobbs, The Nawab of Pataudi, Bill Voce, Maurice Leyland and was captained by Bob Wyatt.

Tyran Liddiard is Penrith Cricket Club first grade player number 212. A very stylish premiership winning wicket keeper batter Tyran has played NSW 2ndXI and a is also a proud member of the Australian Indigenous having had the good fortune to tour England with the team in 2018.

When Penrith won the first-grade premiership in 2018/19 Tyran was awarded the Benaud Medal for player of the match scoring 97 and taking four catches behind the stumps.

In celebration of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War 2 the following is a story about the Gordon District Cricket Club’s own Flying Ace, Jack Quigley, who later became one of its highest scoring batsman.

While being a late entry to the war, having arrived in the UK in mid 1944, Jack certainly made up for it by making over 50 raids into enemy territory in his single engine aircraft including his last one only two days before the German surrender.

After arriving in the UK following over a year of training in Australia and the USA, his first job was to learn how to fly the RAF designated single engine aircraft for which he was posted in July 1944 to the RAF base at Heston near London.

Players of Note in the Shadows (Part 2)

The club has had three Test wicketkeepers. Phil Emery, another loyal clubman and outstanding NSW captain, has certainly left his mark on the club. There was his leadership, wicketkeeping, batting and most noticeably his ability to bring together players from different occupations and skill sets to become members of Gordon premiership teams. We should not forget Adam Gilchrist, who learnt his early cricket at Gordon before moving to Western Australia and becoming a wonderful batsman and wicketkeeper for Australia.
