Dan Babula; 2013-14 Season

During the pre-season ahead of the 2013/14 campaign, a fast bowler arrived at Manly for a trial. Initially, he was placed in the "train-on" net, where players new to the club or those trialling from local cricket were given the opportunity to showcase their abilities while coaches and selectors assessed their suitability for grade cricket. However, it took only a handful of deliveries for it to become clear that Dan Babula was well above that standard and belonged in the First Grade net.

Dan had recently relocated to Sydney's Northern Beaches from Melbourne, where he had represented the prestigious St Kilda Cricket Club. Before his time in Victoria, he had been a higher-grade player at Campbelltown-Camden Cricket Club alongside his brother, Owen.

Selected in First Grade for Round 1, Dan enjoyed an outstanding debut season. He claimed 49 wickets at the exceptional average of 15.57, including two five-wicket hauls—against North Sydney in Round 2 and Hawkesbury in Round 15. His performances were instrumental in a successful season for the First Grade side, which reached the semi-finals of both the two-day and one-day competitions, as well as the quarter-finals of the T20 tournament.

Affectionately known as "Babs", Dan played a significant role in the team's success. His ability to consistently take early wickets gave Manly an advantage from the outset, while his enthusiasm, sense of humour and unwavering positivity made him a valued and respected teammate. Whether bowling, batting or fielding, he approached every challenge with determination and a never-give-up attitude that embodied the spirit of the club.

Although his time at Manly lasted just one season, Dan Babula made a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to play alongside him. His performances, character and contribution to the club ensured he would be remembered long after his departure.
