After joining Manly Warringah Cricket Club a couple of seasons before the 2002/03 campaign, Mark Cameron endured a frustrating start to his time at the club due to a series of injuries. Fully fit and firing at the beginning of the 2002/03 season, however, Cameron produced the breakthrough performances that launched what would become an outstanding cricketing career.

Across the season, Cameron claimed a remarkable 67 wickets at an exceptional average of 16.71, establishing himself as one of the premier fast bowlers in Sydney Grade Cricket. His consistency and match-winning ability were highlighted by five five-wicket hauls, including figures of 7/72 against Mosman, 5/38 against Hawkesbury, a devastating 8/34 against Northern District, 5/53 against Eastern Suburbs and 5/31 against Fairfield.
His outstanding form was rewarded with a First-Class debut for New South Wales, a significant milestone that reflected the quality of his performances throughout the season. Cameron entered a side featuring some of Australia's greatest cricketers, including Steve and Mark Waugh, Michael Clarke, Michael Slater and Simon Katich, while Justin Langer and Mike Hussey played in the opposition—an indication of the elite company he had earned the opportunity to join.
Captained by Peter Procopis, the 2002/03 Manly First Grade side possessed a bowling attack of exceptional quality, with Cameron, Jamie Heath and Shawn Bradstreet all in career-best form Their dominance propelled Manly to the Minor Premiership by a comfortable margin and established the team as the competition benchmark throughout the home-and-away season. Although the campaign ended in disappointment with a semi-final defeat to Penrith, Cameron's extraordinary season remains one of the finest individual bowling performances in the club's history and marked the emergence of a player who would go on to achieve significant success at first-class level.
