During a memorable premiership season, Manly's 1977-78 PGs side was superbly led by captain Bill Athey, whose leadership both on and off the field played a pivotal role in the club's success. Athey also enjoyed an outstanding season with the bat, finishing as the competition's leading run-scorer with 465 runs.

The bowling attack was spearheaded by Ken Pitcher, who claimed the competition's leading wicket-taking honours. His season was highlighted by a remarkable spell of 9/41 against Northern District, one of the finest bowling performances in the club's history.

The season also showcased the emergence of players who would become synonymous with Manly Warringah Cricket Club. Greg Hill, who would go on to become one of the club's greatest servants and most respected figures, enjoyed an excellent season with the bat. Meanwhile, future First Grade player and long-serving Chairman of Selectors Chris Hynes made a significant contribution with his skilful leg-spin bowling.

Manly's dominance throughout the season culminated in a premiership triumph. The side defeated Randwick in the semi-final at the SCG No. 2 before overcoming Bankstown in the Grand Final at Waverley Oval, securing a well-deserved championship and cementing the season as one of the club's finest.
