Under the leadership of captain Simon Couch, the team celebrated a historic triumph, claiming its first premiership since the legendary Mick Pawley–led Green Shield side of 1959/60. The campaign was marked by exceptional individual performances and a dominant grand final showing at Bankstown Oval against Randwick.
The batting lineup was anchored by Andrew Nealon, who secured the season’s highest batting average, while Darren Reeves led the run-scoring charts, amassing the most aggregate runs. Their consistency and resilience at the crease set the foundation for the team’s success.
The bowling attack was equally impressive. R. Betteridge claimed the bowling average, providing crucial breakthroughs throughout the season, while skipper Simon Couch led the side in wickets with a tally of 12. Their combined efforts ensured that the opposition rarely gained the upper hand.
The grand final was a display of complete dominance. Manly posted 209, with Couch top-scoring at 73, before dismissing Randwick for just 45. Betteridge’s remarkable figures of 5 for 14 highlighted the team’s superiority, securing a memorable and emphatic victory.
This premiership campaign also featured future club legends Brian Clemow and Matt Cranney, alongside Mark Higgs, who would go on to represent at the first-class level. The blend of emerging talent and experienced leadership made this season a defining chapter in the club’s rich history.
