The 1952/53 season stands as a notable chapter in the club’s junior history, with the team crowned joint Green Shield premiers following a remarkable campaign. Under the leadership of captain Ray Bright, the side demonstrated both depth and resilience throughout the competition.
The team featured a number of emerging talents, including future first-class cricketer Barry Rothwell, who played a pivotal role during the season. Rothwell’s unbeaten 73 against Gordon was among the standout batting performances and highlighted his considerable potential.
Several players contributed key performances across the season. Bright led from the front with a commanding 91 against Gordon, while Murray Mingay produced valuable innings of 69 against Balmain and 55 against Northern Districts. With the ball, Barry Veitch delivered an exceptional spell of 6 for 36 against North Sydney, while Peter Proudfoot claimed 6 for 30 against Northern Districts.
Mingay also made a significant contribution with the ball, taking 5 for 35 against Balmain to complete a strong all-round showing.
The season concluded in unusual circumstances, with the team declared joint premiers alongside Waverley after discrepancies in the grand final scorecards prevented a definitive result. Despite the anticlimactic finish, the achievement remains a testament to the side’s consistency and quality across the season.
