Manly Warringah strong showing in the 1943-44 Green Shield season
Manly Warringah District Cricket Club | June 18, 2026

During the 1943/44 Green Shield competition, Manly delivered a commendable performance, finishing third after an impressive period in which the club had held the Shield for two consecutive seasons. Although unable to secure a third straight title, the team maintained a high standard of play across both batting and bowling.
Manly’s batting unit proved productive throughout the season, compiling a total of 1,208 runs for the loss of 72 wickets, resulting in a team average of 16.77. In comparison, their opponents managed 1,092 runs but lost 109 wickets in the process, averaging just 10.00—an indication of Manly’s effectiveness with the ball.
Among the standout performers with the bat was future cricketing legend J. Burke, the youngest member of the side, who achieved the highest batting average of 34.50 from three completed innings. J. Nelson was the team’s leading run-scorer, accumulating 207 runs at an average of 29.50, and recording the side’s only century of the season.
The bowling attack was equally impressive, led by B. Watson, who topped both the bowling average and aggregate. Watson claimed 29 wickets for 231 runs at an outstanding average of 7.90. He was well supported by R. Watkins, who secured 24 wickets for 198 runs, maintaining a similarly strong average of 8.20.
Additional contributions came from D. Hanlon, whose 15 wickets marked him as a player of considerable promise, and P. O’Grady, who captured 10 wickets for 125 runs. Notably, O’Grady also achieved the rare feat of a hat-trick during the season.
Overall, despite finishing third, Manly’s performance in the 1943/44 campaign demonstrated depth, balance, and continued excellence following their previous successes.
