While the 1973/74 First Grade premiership under Mick Pawley remains a celebrated chapter in Manly Cricket Club’s history, it is less widely recognised that the club came within one match of securing back-to-back titles the following season.

In 1974/75, again captained by Pawley and built around the nucleus of the previous year’s premiership side, Manly advanced to the grand final despite an inconsistent regular season. The team’s resilience was a defining feature of their campaign, culminating in a strong finals performance.

Emerging talent Graeme Beard, a future Test cricketer, made a significant impact with three centuries during the season. Jeff Macpherson led the bowling attack with an outstanding return of 45 wickets, while Pawley and Paul Stephenson also made valuable contributions, claiming 36 and 34 wickets respectively.

In the grand final, however, Manly was restricted to 113—a reflection of the batting inconsistencies that had affected the side throughout the season. Petersham, who completed the season undefeated, proved deserving premiers, reaching the target with the loss of only three wickets.
