Vale Don Sellin 1944 - 2026

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club | February 28, 2026

The club mourns the passing of Don Sellin, Life Member, loyal servant, and much-loved character, who was part of our community for more than six decades.

Don joined the club in the 1950s and remained actively involved until the past ten years, when ill health gradually made it harder for him to attend. Even then, his connection never faded. He stayed in touch with many members, kept a close eye on results, and continued to follow the fortunes of the club with the same quiet passion that had defined his involvement for so many years.

While Don was never known primarily for his playing ability, he was always known for his presence. A proud left-hander, he could certainly strike a ball cleanly — as evidenced by a treasured photograph believed to have been taken in the 1970s or 1980s, bat raised and eyes focused. It captured a side of Don that many remember well: competitive, capable, and always ready to join in.

His greatest contributions, however, came off the field. Don served as Net and Practice Captain, dedicating countless hours to ensuring training sessions ran smoothly. He was a scorer for multiple grades and teams, a role that requires patience, concentration, and deep knowledge of the game — all qualities he possessed in abundance. Week after week, season after season, he gave his time so others could simply play.

Beyond cricket, Don also contributed significantly to Warringah Rats Rugby Club in a variety of volunteer roles. His commitment to community sport extended well beyond one code. Wherever there was a job to be done, Don was prepared to lend a hand.

He was also known for embracing the lighter side of club life. During lunch and tea breaks, Don would sometimes wander into the inevitable mini games of cricket that spring up when a bat and ball are within reach. One story, fondly retold, comes from a Green Shield match in the early 2000s. With typical enthusiasm, Don struck the ball sweetly — unfortunately straight into the middle of the afternoon tea platter, sending food flying across the room. In a move that only added to the legend, he quickly handed the bat to one of the boys before anyone could properly notice it had been him.

Across generations of players, officials, and families, Don’s steady presence became part of the fabric of the club. He may not have chased personal accolades, but his Life Membership stands as recognition of the immense value of quiet dedication and long service.

Don Sellin’s legacy is not measured in runs scored or wickets taken, but in decades of commitment, friendship, and love for community sport. He will be remembered warmly, spoken of often, and missed deeply.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
