The 1992/93 Poidevin Gray Season: A Story of Untapped Potential

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club | February 01, 2026

The 1992/93 Poidevin Gray season remains one of the great “what might have been” chapters in the club’s history. Rich in talent and leadership, the side showed immense promise but was ultimately denied the opportunity to realise its full potential.

Throughout the season, injuries and representative selections consistently disrupted team continuity. As a result, the side rarely took the field at full strength, making it difficult to build momentum or establish stable combinations. Despite these challenges, the quality within the squad was unmistakable.

Under the guidance of coach David Patterson, the team benefited from strong leadership at multiple levels. Remarkably, the squad featured three captains — Shawn Bradstreet, Craig Glassock, and Peter Procopis — all of whom would later go on to captain the club’s First Grade side. Their presence highlighted both the depth of leadership within the group and the strong developmental pathway the team represented.

The playing roster also included three individuals who would progress to first-class cricket: Bradstreet, Glassock, and Paul Wilson. Their advancement to the highest level of the game further underscored the calibre of talent within the squad.

Beyond individual achievements, the team served as a foundation for long-term club success. Future stalwarts Paul Brenner, Brian Clemow, Alex Maidment, and Simon Couch were all part of the group, each going on to make significant and lasting contributions to the club in the years that followed.

While the 1992/93 season may not have delivered the results its talent suggested were possible, it remains a powerful reminder of the strength of the club’s development system and the enduring impact of that generation of players. In hindsight, it was not a season defined by outcomes, but by the legacy it created.
