Steve Whitfield - Respected and trusted

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club | December 28, 2025

Despite being best known for his distinguished career with local rivals Northern Districts Cricket Club, former NSW representative Steve Whitfield made a significant and lasting contribution to Manly Cricket Club across multiple seasons.

A left-arm orthodox spinner who represented New South Wales in three matches, Whitfield was a key member of Manly’s 1988–89 First Grade premiership and Club Championship–winning side.

This success marked his third First Grade premiership, having previously secured back-to-back titles with Northern Districts in the 1985–86 and 1986–87 seasons, where he formed a formidable spin partnership with Test spinner Peter Taylor.

Whitfield later served as Manly’s Club Coach during the 1994–95 and 1995–96 seasons. He returned in a specialist role as Spin Bowling Coach in 2014–15, a highly successful season in which Manly claimed First and Third Grade premierships as well as the Club Championship.

His influence on emerging finger spinners, including Dylan Marshall and Sam Alexander, was profound and enduring.
