Greg Hill: A Manly-Warringah Waratahs Stalwart

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club | November 26, 2025

Few players have left as lasting a legacy at the Manly-Warringah District Cricket Club as Greg Hill. Representing the club from 1972 to 1996, Greg’s contribution both on and off the field has earned him a revered place in the club’s rich history, culminating in Life Membership — a testament to his service, leadership, and enduring impact.

Over a distinguished 24-year career, Greg established himself as one of the club’s most prolific and consistent performers. With 7,844 runs from 316 innings at an average of 28.42, including 8 centuries and 27 half-centuries, he now sits in the top 10 leading run scorers in Manly-Warringah’s proud history. His highest score - a commanding 134 not out - is emblematic of his ability to anchor an innings and lead from the front. While his batting was his primary strength, he also contributed with the ball, taking 17 wickets at an average of 31.82.

His on-field achievements include being part of the Third Grade Premiership team in 1974/75, as well as the Poidevin-Gray (PG) Shield-winning team in 1977/78. His leadership capabilities were also evident, serving as Second Grade captain for multiple seasons from the late 1980s through to his final season in 1995/96.

Beyond statistics and silverware, Greg Hill’s contribution to Manly Cricket was just as profound off the field. He was a mentor to countless young players throughout the 1980s and 1990s, generously offering his time at training sessions to help emerging talent refine their technique and develop their game. His approachable manner and commitment to the club’s values made him a natural leader and a role model in every sense.

In 1991, Greg was selected as a member of the Manly touring team that travelled to the United Kingdom — a reflection of his standing within the club and his value as both a player and ambassador.

The club’s Annual Report upon his Life Membership aptly captured his legacy — a man of integrity, resilience, and unwavering dedication to the game and to Manly-Warringah. Greg Hill is not only one of the greatest run-scorers the club has seen, but also one of its most respected figures — a true servant of the game and club whose influence will be felt for generations.
