Round 11 - Season 1994/95
As Penrith recorded one of its best performances of the season by winning four of the five grades last weekend, captain Trevor Bayliss was the hero of the first grade victory over Waverley at Waverley Oval.
Penrith was in early trouble on Saturday at 3/45 but Bayliss continued his innings on Sunday to finish at 174 not out as the Panthers declared at 4/330. Bayliss, who has been continually overlooked for the State team this season despite his outstanding club form, was then called to the SCG to field for NSW in the Sheffield Shield match against Victoria as a replacement for the injured Greg Matthews. Also in Penrith's innings against Waverley, Rod Bower combined with Bayliss to score 72 and newly selected Australian under-19 representative Garry Sheen added 35 not out. Waverley was never in the hunt and the Panthers' bowlers dismissed the home side for 212. Stuart Karppinen bowled a fiery opening spell for 3/66 and was backed up by Paul Goldsmith (2/33), Steve Nikitaras (2/38) and Phil Chie (2/49).
Second grade was the only Penrith team to lose at the weekend. Waverley was dismissed for 270, with Warren Buttigieg and Glen Sutcliffe taking three wickets each and Shane Greggs two. Murray Rayner continued his return to form with 110 but he wasn't supported by any of the other batsmen and the Panthers were dismissed for 222.
The third grade side continued on its winning ways with a strong victory. Penrith scored 8/198, with Jason Bishop (60) and Matthew Tingay (51) leading the way, then Michael Goldsmith took 7/55 as Waverley was dismissed for 103.
The fourth grade side finally broke its drought in a close match. Penrith was restricted to 8/176, with Michael Buffett and Dilip Balu both scoring 41, but the Panthers dismissed Waverley for 170, with Ben Buffett taking 4/48.
In fifth grade, Penrith was dismissed for 129, with Andrew Pesle scoring 55. Waverley was then bowled out for 97, with Ross Kerkham (3/34) and Matthew Halse (3/23) doing the major wicket-taking.
In another Saturday/Sunday round this weekend, Penrith will play Parramatta.
